Main Aims

  • To provide gist and scan reading practice using a text about Social Media Networks in the context of "The rise and rise of Youtube"

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of the reasons to use social media networks

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Teacher will ask students which social media networks the person in the video refers to, and will play the video. This will help students get an idea of the topic. After watching the video, T will get Ss' answers, and they will move on to the next task.

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-15 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Teacher will pair the Ss and give each pair a group of words and cut-ups with word definitions, parts of speech, word stresses, and asks them to match the cut-ups with the words they have. This will be done as a pre-teach of vocabulary for reading, and when the Ss complete the activity, T will provide Ss with Feedback and will do drilling and will give them the answer key. After that, T will ask the pairs to think of the Pro's and Con's of Social Media and write three of them down each. Then, there will be a WC feedback. While-Reading/Listening #1 (7-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

This part will include prediction and a while-reading task. Firstly, Ss will be given 3 questions to choose an answer for, and then go through the text to find the correct answers, and T will give FB and A/K. This will take 3-5 minutes. Secondly, T will make the Ss read the text again and choose the best title from the given three options. This will take about 4-5 minutes.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Thirdly, Students will be given some questions that require comprehension of the text, during which Ss will be allowed to read again to find the correct answers. Then, T will do FB and give the answers. This will take about 8-10 minutes.

Post-Reading/Listening (5-8 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Students will be asked to talk with their partners about "What do you use social networks for?", and they will be given some possible reasons such as shopping, finding out the news, learning a new language, looking up for information, booking flights or hotels, watching films, speaking to friends, etc. This will give them an opportunity to practice the target language.
