Intermediate level

Description

In this lesson, Ss will learn new vocabulary about the social life, focusing on the people's reviews on their immediate neighbourhood, and will learn new vocabulary, and read the text "How well do you know your neighbours?" from Speak Out - Intermediate. Vocabulary will include both the words in the text and the exercise 1, 2 and 9 in the same book.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of getting on (different forms), compound nouns in the context of neighbourhood

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide scan and deduction reading practice using a text about neighbours

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Ss will be asked to talk about their neighbours through answering the questions in the exercise 1. This will set the context and will give the Ss to engage in the lesson.

Exposure (25-35 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Firstly, Ss will be asked to complete exercise 2A in pairs.(5-6mins) T will monitor and take down notes for the problems Ss are facing. Then the teacher will clarify the meanings of the words in the bold while giving the answer key and the FB process (4-5 mins) and ask them to move to the exercise 2B, where they are to tell their partners the true sentences for them (1-2 mins). Secondly, as to move to the prediction part of the pre-reading, Ss will be asked to complete exercise 3A (3-4 mins). They will try to predict the answers before reading the text itself and then will check their answers by reading the text, as suggests the exercise 3B (5-8 mins). T will tell them to check their answers in pairs and will give FB while providing the A/K. (2-3 mins) Thirdly, T will ask Ss to answer the questions in exercise 4(2-3 mins) so as to check Students' understanding of the passage. This will be the deduction part. T will ask them to check their answers in their pairs, and will give FB by asking random Ss the answers and concluding the idea of the passage.(2-3 mins) This stage will include controlled and semi-controlled practices.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

T will write "bus stop", "tennis court", "train station", "traffic light", "parking lot" on the board, ans asks Ss what do these have in common. According to the responses, T will show them that they all are conpound nouns, and will go on explaning how compound nouns are formed. Teacher will write the words' the parts of speech, and ask them to move to the exercise 9, where they are expected to find the positive, negative or both meanings in the provided sentences in 9A. This will be followed by 9B and 9C, where Ss are required to underline the compound nouns and match their patterns with their partners. Teacher will provide FB and A/K.

Free Practice (4-5 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

If there is still time, T will ask students to write a small paragraph on their neighbours and will provide immediate error correction and FB.
