Description

In this lesson, students learn about the present simple (+) in the context of personal information. The lesson starts with a controlled practice about their profiles that was written in the previous lesson. The aim is to elicit the present simple from this. This is followed by an exercise where students have to match correct nouns to correct verbs. Finally they work in small groups and practice more about verb-noun collocations.

Main Aims

  • To review and practise the present simple tense (+) in the context of personal information

Subsidiary Aims

  • To give students controlled speaking practice to develop spoken accuracy.
  • To provide focus on pronunciation of the -s endings

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

My daily routine in the context of Present Simple Tense: -Talk about what I do every day in an order eg. I wake up at 6.30 am/ I have a shower/ I have breakfast/ I brush my teeth/ I put on my clothes/ I leave my house at 7.30/ I walk to the metrobus stop etc.. - Ask students to speak to their partners about their daily routine and let some of them talk about their partners' routine.

Preparation for controlled practice (3-5 minutes) • To make a link to previous lesson and to elicit the present simple

-Write some of the students' sentences from their profiles which they have written in the previous lesson and get them find the verb. Give a sample sentence and point out the verb first and let them continue. -Elicit the form of present simple with I,you,we,they,he,she,it.

Controlled Practice (6-8 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Students do ex.4 p.21 and check in pairs -Give sts instructions for the exercise and let them do it individually before allowing them to check the answers with their partners -Listen 1.25 to check correct answers with the WC

Highlighting (3-5 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

-Students highlight when to add -s to the verb through ex.4 in p21. -Practice saying the example sentences. Focus on the pronunciation of the -s ending: e.g. the /s/ sound in /spi:ks/ and the /z/ sound in /livz/,/steiz/..

Clarification (6-8 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

-Draw a table on the board to show the rules of the Present Simple Tense. -Point out that after he,she,it, we add -s to the verb. eg. I live in Istanbul / She lives in Istanbul -Also point out that after he,she it, have becomes has eg. I have breakfast / She has breakfast

Controlled Practice 2 (6-8 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

-Students do ex.5 p.21 and check in pairs. -Check the answer with the WC

Controlled Practice 3 (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

-Sts practice more by doing the exercise on page 134 -They work individually first and check their answers with their partners -Check the answers with the whole class

Free Practice (6-8 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

-Get sts to work in small groups -Give each group the daily routine flash cards -Allow them to make sentences in their group according to the nouns of the pictures

Delayed Error Corrections (3-5 minutes) • To correct sts' common mistakes

- Write some of the mistakes sts made during their free practice - Elicit the correct answers from the sts
