Description

In this lesson, the target language is modals used to express prohibition, obligation, and permission. The students also learn how to express the aforementioned using non-modal words and structures. Ss also practice the target language through the productive skill of speaking.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of modal verbs of obligation, permission, and prohibition in addition to non-modal structures used to express the same items in the context of rules and regulations

Procedure

Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The teacher provide some visuals on the board using which the word sign is elicited.

Test #1 (5-8 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language

The Ss are given a multiple choice question on form and meaning. The teacher monitors the process to provide assistance when necessary. The Ss check their answers in pairs.

Teach (5-10 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage

The teacher presents the answers on the board and asks and asks the class which item they answered right and which item they answered incorrectly. The incorrect items are then clarified using guided discovery. The form is also elicited alongside pronunciation.

Test #2 (5-10 minutes) • Check students' use of the target language again and compare with the first test

The teacher provides the class with another activity testing the same areas of grammar. The students check their answers in pairs. T monitors the activity and tries to provide feedback where necessary

semi-Controlled Practice (5-10 minutes) • To provide students with semi-controlled practice of the target language

The students are given visuals. They tell each other what the visuals mean using the target language. This activity is done in pairs. T randomly chooses individual students to give the answers as WC feedback and provides error-correction as needed.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

The students work in groups to come up with rules and regulations related to various places and situations. The situations and places are given by the teacher on the board. T monitors and takes notes of the errors to check them WC later on. In case there is any extra time, the also personalizes the subject by asking the students to work and pairs and use the following question to have a conversation. 1. Have you ever broken a rule? 2. What happened after you broke the rule? 3. why do you think we have rules?
