Description

In this lesson, students will practise one gist, one detailed detailed and one specific information listening tasks in the context of the Trabant cars. Since gist listening is relatively easy, vocabulary pre-teaching will be done after it. The lesson will end with a speaking activity.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist, specific information and detailed in the context of the Trabant, an old car.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of the Trabant, an old car
  • To provide clarification of engine, appear, smoke, model, recycle, fan, pollution, jokes in the context of the Trabant, an old car

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The teacher will show some pictures of the Trabant and try to activate students' previous knowledge about it and elicit words related to it.

Listening for Gist (5-8 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information listening tasks

Students will listen to the recording and check their predictions about the question what is the main idea of the article. Students will check their answers in pairs and the teacher will elicit from whole class.

Pre-teach Vocabulary (5-8 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Students will be some keys before the detailed reading. They write these words into three columns, know it, sort of know it, don't know it. First they will check with their partners and then the teacher might give a glossary, with sample sentences.

Listening for Details (5-8 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference listening tasks

Students will listen to the recording again and answers true/false questions about the Trabant. The teacher will determine through monitoring whether to play the recording a second time or not. They will check their answers in pairs and the teacher will elicit from the whole class with justification.

Listening for Specific Information (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging specific information listening tasks

Students will listen to the article to find out what some specific numbers about the Trabant refer to. Students will check their answers in pairs and the teacher will elicit from. At the end of the activity, the teacher will provide the students with the article on PP.

Semi-controlled practice Speaking (6-8 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Students will be given some prompts to talk about their favourite car. In groups of three, they will talk about it, the teacher will monitor and elicit some ideas from the groups . She will give some delayed feedback.
