Description

In this lesson, students will practice speaking in the context of interviewing others on arts, and entertainment: favorite celebrities, books, music, etc. using a special language that will help them express their personal preferences. The lesson begins with setting the context of favorite films, books, music, etc and match answers to relevant questions. This is followed by activities to use special prompts to assist them in their productive stage of the lesson. The lesson ends with an interview and a simple writing activity where they express their personal tastes in written form.

Main Aims

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in interviews in the context of speaking about their favorite celebrities and entertainment such as books, films, music, etc.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide the opportunity for the students to speak using useful language to help them express personal preferences and tastes in celebrities, music, films, books, etc.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Slide 1: [2 min] Teacher shows on power point the words: music, films, books, games, plays, actors, actresses, singers, a concert, opera. PW: discuss and give examples on all the words, if possible. WC: They circle the words they like best. Slide 2: [3 min] Pictures of celebrities, arts and entertainment from Turkey and other countries. PW: Students speak about their favorite picture(s).

Exposure (8-8 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading

[3 min] Ex. 1- Pre-teach vocabulary: favorite = you like best/concert = a group of people playing music together/enjoy = spend a good time/ballet = special dance. [2 min] CCQ: Sts use the words to make complete sentences. 1. ‘The Matrix’ is my …………….movie. I like it best. (favorite) 2. I never go to ………………..because I don’t like this type of music. (concerts) 3. Do you ……………going to the cinema? Yes, I have a good time. (enjoy) 4. …………….is not my favorite type of dance. It is hard. (Ballet) Teacher monitors and offers support where necessary. FB: teacher elicits answers Modelling: Teacher models the following activity to expose them to the language. Ex. 1- Q: Who's your favorite actress? A: My favorite actress is Beren Saat. On the table: [3 min] GW: sts get slips of papers with questions a-f & answers to match. Slide 3: FB: Answers on the board in the slide.. sts check.

Useful Language (5-5 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

[5 min] Ex. 2 Modelling: Teacher models the activity. PW: sts get slips of the following What kind of (movies-music-books-games, plays) do you like? • What kind of ………… …………. you like? • …………..like reading? • When …………….last go to ……………….? • What …………..see? • Who……………by? • Who ……..in it? • ………enjoy it? • Who……………favorite actor? Teacher monitors and offers support where necessary. FB: Sample answers show on the board for sts to check.

Productive Task(s) (15-15 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

[5min] PW: sts use the prompts to write their questionnaire on a similar topics: [books, music, games, directors, actors.] [5 min] CW: Sts mingle and ask and answer questions around the class using their questionnaire. [3 min] Slide 2 sts are reminded to use the remaining prompts through a quick look at the HO and highlight what they have not used yet, and use them. Vocabulary pictures from Ex. 1 show on the board and students imagine they were going to interview one of the people on the board and prepare a few questions for the task. [2 min] Sts use the questions above and ask further questions and answer.

Feedback and Error Correction (12-12 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

[8 min] Role play an interview with someone about their personal preferences using the vocabulary and the prompts learned. [4 min] Writing: sts write about their favorite celebrity, art or entertainment in a short paragraph and share their friends. Teacher monitors and supports where necessary.
