Defining Relative Clauses

Description

In this lesson students will learn about Defining Relative Clauses through guided discovery, then they will have 2 controlled and one semi controlled practice of the taught grammar. If there is time left, students will have a freer practice of the target language.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of the Defining Relative clauses in the context of New and Old

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice when describing things, people and places.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-6 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Students sit in pairs opposite each other. T displays questions about the words learned in the previous lesson on the board. One member of a pair is looking at the screen and asking questions to the other member who is turned away from the screen and cannot see the questions. Then, the members switch.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

T displays 2 simple sentences on the board , asks ss to combine them to have one sentence. Then T displays the compound sentence and highlights the relative pronouns.

Clarification (5-6 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Ss complete the rule for the TL in pairs using example sentences in the Grammar Worksheet. Whole Class Feedback on the WB.

Controlled Practice 1 (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Ss complete definitions by using who, that or which, check in pairs, then check as a whole class. later they choose correct definitions for words in pairs, check as a whole class.

Controlled Practice 2 (8-10 minutes) • to provide further practice of the TL

Ss complete definitions with who, which, that and where and the correct form of the verbs in the box in pairs. Whole Class Feedback.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To give ss a chance to use the TL in more meaningful context

T divides the class into 2 groups and gives each groupa se of picture cards in an envelope. T demonstrates the activity, picks up a cardand describes the word/ phrase untill ss guess. Ss play the game , taking turns to take a card and define the word.T tells ss they must not use the word on the card.The first students in the group who says the word keeps the card. Who has the most number of cards at the end of the game is the winner.

Freer Practice (6-8 minutes) • to provide students with a freer practice of the target language.

Ss work in pairs to write 3 definitions on a piece of paper then say their definitions aloud and the whole class guesses.
