Description

In this lesson, students will focus mostly on listening by listening to an interview about an author talking about how new words are formed. Students will complete controlled activities, and read a text about the author's book.

Main Aims

  • To provide specific information and deduction listening practice using a text about a book in the context of how new words are formed

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide scan reading practice using a text about an author's book in the context of how new words are created

Procedure

Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To introduce students to blocking vocabulary.

- Show PPT - Ask CCQs (also on PPT) and drill

Brainstorming (4-5 minutes) • To allow students to brainstorm and come up with ideas about what the text will be about.

-Write "Brave New Words" on the WB - Students think up of topics; write them on WB - Instructions: "Read the text, and see which one of your predictions were true." - Pass out HO(pg115) - Circle the correct ones

Listening for Specific Information (4-5 minutes) • To let students listen to the recording for specific information.

- Instructions " Look at Acitivity 2. Listen and put the topics in order." - PLay 2.73. Repeat if necessary - Ss check with partners - FB by asking WC their answers. Make sure Ss understand the meaning of the topics.

Listening and Matching (5-6 minutes) • To let students listen to the recording again for specific words.

- Tell students to look at the topics in Activity 2. - Give demo. Write "breakfast" and "lunch" on WB, and write "brunch" under it. Ask which topic it is (combining parts of words) - Instructions: "Look at the words on Activity 3. Listen and match them to the topics in Activity 2." - Play 2.73. Replay if needed - FB by asking WC their answers -

Listening Gap-fill Activity (4-5 minutes) • To allow students to fill in the gaps by listening for specific words.

- Instructions: "Listen and fill in gaps." - Pass out Gap-Fill Script - Play 2.73. Repeat if needed. - FB by asking WC the answers

True or False (5-6 minutes) • To give students the oppurtunity to listen to the recording for deeper understanding.

- Instructions: "Listen to the recording. Decide if the sentences are true or false." - Pass True or False HO - Ss check in pairs - FB by asking whole class answers

Competitive Brainstorming Activity (3-6 minutes) • To give students the chance to brainstorm together about new words in their native langauge.

- Put Ss into 2 or 3 groups. - Instructions: "Think up of new Turkish words with your group. The group with the most words wins."
