Main Aims

  • To provide writing practice for fluency and accuracy in the context of travel plans.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice of present continuous and "will" for future plans.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

* Play "Spin the globe" with students. For every location, ask the S if they would like to go there and why or why not.

Exposure (6-8 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading

* Put first slide with questions on WB and review questions with Ss. * Tell them they will take one minute to read quickly and answer the first question. ICQ: "How long do you have?" Give each S a copy of HO1. After one minute, review question 1 with WC. * Instruct Ss to continue with question 2 and check answers with pair. Review with WC.

Useful Language (10-12 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

* Elicit difference between present continuous for arranged plans and "will" as an auxiliary verb for predictions. Drill the following for pronunciation: I'm going, I'll go, I won't go. I'm arriving, I'll arrive, I won't arrive. I'm having, I'll have, I won't have. * Put next slide with questions on WB. Do first question with WC. Tell Ss to answer questions, check with pairs, and put answers on WB when finished. Review with WC.

Productive Task (18-20 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

* Brainstorm vacation locations, activities, and predictions on WB. * Tell Ss they will now write a letter of their own to a friend detailing their own travel plans using both present continuous and "will." They have fifteen minutes.

Feedback and Error Correction (3-5 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

* Arrange chairs in a circle and tell Ss to cover the names of any locations in their letter. They will take turns reading their letters out loud, and the other students will have to guess the location based on the predictions.
