Description

In this lesson, students will be introduced the to the modal verb will and its contraction won't in the context of predictions.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of will and won't in the context of predictions.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice of modal auxiliary verb 'will' and it's negative 'won't' in the context future events and predictions.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-7 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

* A short story about yourself re football. * Using images (source: Google Images) on the PC engage Ss with a discussion on football and Eurovision to introduce the lesson.

Highlighting (3-5 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

* Ss will work in pairs to ask each other who they think will win the soccer championship or the Eurovision. * They will take turns in asking and answering in either, yes I think/believe they will or won't.

Exposure (6-8 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

* Project three sentences on the WB and get a student or three to fill in the missing verb + infinitive to illustrate its function.

Clarification (6-8 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

* Write 'will' on the WB and clarify meaning, form and pronunciation. * Indicate tense and its contracted form - 'll and its uses with pronouns - I'll, you'll, they'll, we'll, he'll, she'll, it'll. * Ss will their predictions on the HO and peer check each others predictions.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

* Ex 2 HO 'The pessimists phrase book'. * Ss will gap-fill using a word bank. * Ss will listen to audio 3.3 and check their answers.

Semi-Controlled Practice (5-6 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

HO * Ss will make up their own pessimist responses to given situations.

Free Practice (5-6 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language
