Description

In this lesson the students are going to study about some famous people from all around the world and use past simple tense to describe them.They will try to make a some past simple wh questions and give answers.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of Past simple Wh questions in the context of famous people's life

Subsidiary Aims

  • Developing fluency in speaking through the context of describing famous people and their past.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-6 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Showing a set of photos of famous figures and eliciting their names. Ss in pairs brainstorm anything they know about these figures. Feedback: Check what info Ss have in open class.

Exposure (2-4 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

A set of four Wh questions as general knowledge quiz about the figures. Ss in pairs answer and check in whole class.

Highlighting and Clarification (5-8 minutes) • To darw Ss attention to the target language and clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Highlighting a marker sentence on the board asking some CCQs. Where did Albert Einstein come from? He came from Germany. Did it happen in the past or present? [Past] Did it continue to now? [No] Did it finish in the past? [Yes] Did it happen one time? [Yes] Show the pattern on board and ask for choral and individual drills.

Controlled Practice (3-5 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Ss sort a set of scrambled words to make wh questions

Semi-Controlled Practice (6-8 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Ss ask each other the Wh questions from the previous section and provide real answers. Feedback: which answer was more interesting for you?

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Ss draw a time line indicating some dates each of which represent a certain event in their life. (Birth, Marriage, Graduation etc.) Ss ask each other what each number represents on the time line. Feedback: Did your partner have any surprising answer?

Freer Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide more meaningful and productive task on the target language

Ss in groups of 3-5 make a number of general knowledge questions to run a quiz. Groups then ask each other the questions and any group the has more correct answers will be the winner.
