Description

In this lesson, the students will learn about verb opposites in the context of making predictions using "will". They will complete some controlled practice activities in pairs and groups of 3's and then write horoscopes for the classmates as free writing practice.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Stick words to the WB. Invite them to WB to sort them. Elicit what the words have in common. Ask What kinds of words are these? Ans- Verbs Opposites- another word for opposite- antonym Get Ss to think of more verbs that have opposites in pairs.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Place Ss in pairs Show hand-out, tell them to match the verbs to the pictures and then write the opposite to these verbs. Peer check with next group Feedback on WB Note the different usage of "borrow" & "lend" Model sentences - "Can you lend me a pen?" "Can I borrow this book from you?" Go through pronunciation.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Ask again what kind of words are these. Nouns? Adjectives? Etc. Ask "What form of the verb is it?" Ans. Infinitive. Ask to write the past tense & the past participle of the verbs individually (or in pairs) Peer check. Ask "When can we use this form?" Briefly refer to Murat's lesson of using 'will' for predictions.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Stick words to the board and get all students standing in two groups. Tell Ss to invent a team name. Explain the rules of the game. One S from each team picks a card with a verb on it and either act/mime the words OR draw a the picture. Team has to guess the verb. 1 point for each right answer. The team with the points words win! This can be adapted for small groups-as WC activity

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Divide groups evenly (3-4 people per group) Form a circle. Ask "How do people predict the future? What do they use?" Ask "How to people predict futures in Turkey." Show a Turkish coffee. Ask about magazines and newspapers, what part of them can you find predictions? Elicit horoscopes. Show a picture of Star signs CCQ- "Predictions are in the past, present or future?" "Are they certain or uncertain?" Give sentence builder hand out to Ss and ask to complete individually. Peer check Feedback & CCQ's

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

In same groups. Tell Ss that they are going to write horoscopes for eachother for the week. Show handout to Ss. Tell Ss to fill in the first entry, fold it and pass to the person on their left, The next person fills in the next entry and passes it on and so on. Encourage weird funny and interesting ones. When all entries are filled hand to the next person and this is their horoscope. Have Ss read their horoscopes and if they have any questions, ask the person who wrote that entry. Share some of the horoscopes with the class. This can be adapted to small groups by only using one group. Keep passing until the entries are filled.
