Main Aims

  • To provide gist, specific information and detailed listening practice using two texts in the context of Indian films.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of plot describing words in the context of film
  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in the past simple yes/no questions in the context of films

Procedure

Warmer (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T will ask the Ss to think what is the genre of the following movie and where it is made. T will show a video clip about a movie called Magadheera and will take some feedback and elicit the possible story of the film.

Pre-Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the actual listening and make it accessible

T will ask the Ss to do ex.1 from the worksheet to pre-teach vocabulary (film industry, produce, musical number, entertaining, spice) for a short presentation about Indian cinema. Brief FB fo right answers. T will give a PP-presentation and Ss will choose the correct words to complete the sentences (ex. 2) on the the worksheet in pairs. W/C FB. T will teach Yes/No question form (Did/Didn't) in the past tense on w/b and will ask the Ss to read the questions in ex. 3. T will show the Ss a trailer of a film Magadheera. After the trailer, T asks Ss to ask and answer the questions in ex. 3 in pairs using both positive and negative question forms.

Live Listening #1 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information listening tasks

T will pre-teach vocabulary (electric current, reincarnation, enemy, fatally wounded, rescue), which is essential for understanding the plot of Magadheera. T will ask the Ss to listen to the order of events while T is doing the 1st listening. Ss can stop the teacher to ask for questions (How?/Where?/Why?/When? etc.) Then Ss will put the events on the strips of paper to the right order in groups and bring them to the w/b to check the right order.

Live Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference listening tasks

T will do a 2nd live listening, this time in chunks and showing short clips from Magadheera before the chunks. Video clips will help visual learners to connect what they hear with the context. After each chunk Ss have some time to answer gap-fill guestions (ex. 4) in pairs. At the end of the live listening T will put the answer keys around the class and give the Ss the listening script. If there is time, Ss will form questions by putting the words in to right order and answer them in pairs (ex. 5 and 6). If not, Ss will move on to the post-listening activity. Feedback: Short whole class FB about the plot and the movie.

Post-Listening (10-12 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Ss will prepare short presentations about their favourite movies by writing main events of the plot to the HO. Time limit 5 minutes. Then they will present the plots of their favourite movies in pairs. Ss can ask each other questions (model questions in the HO). General FB and delayed error correction if there's time.
