Description

In this lesson SS will mainly practice vocabulary and speaking. Students will learn new vocabulary related to news. It is also an opportunity for some SS who already knows some of the vocabulary will reinforce their vocabulary. A word ''news'' will be elicited, it is followed by pre-teach vocabulary to set the lesson context and engage students to the topic ''news''.The SS will talk about good&bad news related to their personal experiences.In stage three and four, SS will deal with fill-in the blanks and matching task to practice learned vocabulary.SS willl have controlled activity in stage five which will be followed by freer activities to use learned vocabulary in a speaking activity.

Main Aims

  • To provide practice of vocabulary items related to life events in the context of good&bad news

Subsidiary Aims

  • To give students freer speaking practice for using vocabulary related to life events to help their spoken fluency

Procedure

Stage 1- Quick lead-in (5-6 minutes) • To get SS to elicit 'News'

-Tell students to go outside of the class and find flashcards in which there are different letters; -N,E,W,S,T,K,R,I -Play hangman with students for the word 'NEWS' -Students will be given 1-2 minutes to discuss. -Help students , if necessary. -praise students to encourage.

Stage 2- Pre-teach vocabulary (6-7 minutes) • To set the lesson context and engage students to the topic ''news''

-In this stage, SS will be taught new vocabulary by the use of powerpoint visuals. -SS will be shown a powerpoint visuals;(Go through the stages of ECDW to teach) -I am going to introduce Mr.Bean to SS, -I will tell SS , 'we are going to talk about some of the events related to Mr.Bean.' •get an admission •have an accident •pass exams •get promotion •get a degree •getting maried •be offered a job •buy a house •buy a car •split up with a partner -SS will try to guess what the pictures are about. -T ask some CCQ to check their understanding of the use or meaning of the Target Vocabulary. -T drills the words. -T also writes word stress and part of speech

Stage 3- Controlled Activities (4-5 minutes) • To have SS relate the topic(good&bad news) about their personal experiences

-SS will be given coloured cut-ups to categorize news under two headings; -Show a demo, Good News Bad News •get an admission •have an accident •pass exams •split up with a partner •get a degree •be offered a job •buy a car •get promotion •buy a house •getting maried -SS works in pairs. -SS compares their answers in pairs. -Give SS answer key. -Good&Bad News will be elicited by SS.

Stage 4-Fill in the blanks (4-5 minutes) • to carry out controlled activity in which SS can use only the Target Vocabulary

-SS will be given fill in the blanks -SS completes the sentences with the words in the box. -split,lost,pass,won,bought,accident,degree,offered,place,promoted,engaged,failed -Tell SS to peer check their answers. -Tell SS that answer key is outside.SS goes outside and do the correction. -Monitor the SS while they are on the task

Stage 5-Matching activity (5-6 minutes) • To get the students to use the learned vocabulary in a matching task

-SS will be given cut-ups -SS matches cut-ups to make phrases. -SS works alone. 1.pass •an accident 2.get •your job 3.win •with a partner 4.have •a competition 5.lose •promoted 6.split up •exams -Give 2 min to SS to complete the phrases. -Tell SS to peer check their answers. -Give SS an answer key. -SS will be asked to practice these sentences with their peers. -Monitor SS and do error-correction if necessary. -Give delayed feedback.

Stage 6- Controlled Activity (6-7 minutes) • To provide extend the target language through vocabulary and speaking practice

-T play SS a video. -Ask SS 'what was the video about?' -T wants SS to have an idea about 'there are lots of ways to give bad news' -Ask SS 'What is the best way to give bad news?' -T stick some flashcards on the board to help SS to discuss the best ways of giving bad news. -give a reason -tone of voice -prepare your listener -making people too upset -SS works in groups and discuss -T monitors. -T gives SS delay feedback.

Stage 7- Phrases in the box (5-6 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

-Ask SS to complete the text with phrases in the box. -Give SS the handouts. -Give SS 3 min to finish. -SS peer checks their results. -Provide AK. -Put SS in discussion about 'Does it mention any of your idea in the text?' -Monitor SS and take FB. -give delayed feedback.

Stage 8- Freer Activity (6-7 minutes) • To give the SS an opportunity to use the learned vocabulary in a speaking activity

-T tells SS that they have to think of good &bad news from their lives or create a story about it.(SS will also focus on how they did deliver good&bad news) -Give SS 2-3 min. -Tell SS to share and discuss their stories. -Monitor SS
