face2face reading practice by using a text about the life of a singer

Description

In this lesson, the students will read a text about life of a Turkish singer and composer. The lesson'll start with one of the popular songs of the composer.They'll guess who he is. Then T elicits what they already know about him. They are asked to skim for gist, scan and do intensive reading in turn in order to do the relevant exercises.At the while reading stage, T introduces some phrases from the text and give Ss the HOs to be fiiled out. Before post reading stage,they'll inroduced some regular and irregular verbs from the text.For the post reading activity they'll practice intensive reading and find out the required sentences.At the end as a freer practice they'll be given a task to talk about.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist,deduction and intensive reading practice using the text about the life of a famous Turkish singer

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in the context of life events
  • To provide the students review of" life events" phrases

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Ss will listen to some part of a song of Barış Manço. I'll ask about what they know about him. Which of his songs do you like most? Do you like him?(Why/Why not Do you remember his program on TV?

Pre-reading (7-9 minutes) • To provide the Ss with gist and specific information reading task through skimming

I give them the Ss the HOs of the reading text on which there are some information gaps.I also give them the HOs of ex.2 and ask them to fill in the gaps with the correct dates and numbers. I set a time limit around 1 minute.I want them to check their answers in pairs .Then I make a live listening activity and want them to check their answers while I'm reading the text.

While reading (10-13 minutes) • To provide Ss more detailed reading task through scanning

I give them the HOs of ex.1 which introduces the phrases about life events. They work in pairs and fill in the phrases with the given verbs.Then I ask them to find and underline those phrases in the text. I give them the HOs of ex.3 which asks them to put the events in order. I stick the straps of events on the wall.They put them on W/B in the right order. Then I give them T/F HOs. I want them to work in pairs check their answers. I draw two columns on the W/B with the headings of T and F. They write the numbers in the respective columns & explain the reason ıf the sentence is false.

Post reading (13-15 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text through intensive reading and expand on what've learned.

Before post reading activities, I try to elicit what they know about regular and irregular verbs. I write the regular and irregular verbs from the text on the W/B.Then I write their past forms and want them to underline in the text. I divide the W/B into 3 under the headings of FAMILY-EDUCATION-CAREER. I ask them to find two sentences for each column about Barış's life. I ask volunteers to write their sentences under each column.As a backpocket activity ,I want them to write 3 years on a paper.They work in pairs and they tell their partners what happenned on these years and why they are important for them.As F.Back, I ask them what's the most interesting life event they learn from their partners.
