Materials

Abc HO_4 - Person A
Abc HO_4 - Person B

Main Aims

  • To provide scan reading practice using a text about last week in the context of personal experiences

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of past simple - was/were in the context of last week

Procedure

Lead in (5-10 minutes) • To get the students thinking about what they did last week.

Using the first slide get the students to brain storm what they did last week, pay attention to the sentence structure but do not correct them until the next stage. Gleam as many different actions as possible in this stage.

Pre Reading (10-15 minutes) • To introduce the students to the past simple grammar rule using was/were and their negative counterparts.

Mini test: Show the students slide 2 of the ppt, give them a minute or so in their pairs to see if they know to use was/were. Use this knowledge to gauge how long to spend on the grammar explanation. Get the students to construct 4 examples of the positive forms was/were. Get the students to construct 4 examples of the negative forms wasn't/weren't. To check the students comprehension of this rule get the students to complete slide 2. Check answers on the board as a whole class. At the very end of this stage give the students the body of text.

While reading (15-20 minutes) • To give the students some reading practice for both gist and specific information

Gist Reading - Give the students one minute to read the text and ask them to answer the questions on slide 6: Do the feedback for this question as a group. Reading for specific information - I will give the students HO_2 and ask the students to complete the questions on there. Once they have completed the questions I will put them into pairs and get them to check their answers with their partner. After a minute or so I will check the answers as a whole class and pay attention to any problems that may have arisen. During this feedback stage I will take the opportunity to drill the complete (correct) sentences with the whole class.

Post Reading (10-20 minutes) • To give the students some speaking practice using the past simple tense.

A simple role playing exercise, where I will assign each student the letter A or B and give them the related part of the role playing exercise, they will have to construct the sentences to show that they did it last week and tell their partner, their partner will then have to make a note of what their friend did last week and vice versa. In the final minutes of this exercise I will ask the A students to list what B students did and the same the other way around.
