Description

In this lesson, students will practice expressions which are used in daily English. The lesson will be started by a PPT projection which includes some pictures of food , waiter /waitress , bill .. etc and there are also some pictures to elicit the meaning of 'too much, too many, enough...etc' in the context. Besides, the students will also practice the expressions with 'I would like... an can I have...' and they will notice how to sound polite. By the follow-up activities, the students will practice speaking the target language via a roleplay and a discussion(productive skill). At the end, if time allows , students will correct their own mistakes.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of expressions which are used for making polite requests (I'd like ,can I have..etc) and some words that are used for everyday English such as too many , too much ...etc in the context of food.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a roleplay and a dialogue in the context of food.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

1-I will bring some stuff that I bought for my house. I will ask from SS to think how they communicate with the salesman/woman while they are doing shopping. (Give SS one minute to think. 2-Elicit 'I want' and 'I'd like' from SS.

Pre-Teach Vocabulary (5-7 minutes) • To provide necessary vocabulary for the target language

-Elicit the needed vocabulary via pictures and the parts of speech from SS. - The vocabulary : The menu, bill, order, waiter /waitress, too many, sort, enough, large, else, too much, better , only -Use ECDW

Meaning Activity # 1 (7-8 minutes) • To clarify the meaning of target language via PPT and an activity.

1-Distribute SS HO1. 2-Give instructions as ' Complete the sentences with the given words in the box. ' 3-SS will complete the sentences alone. 4-SS will check the answers in pairs. 5-The answer key will be given as a HO. 6-Monitor and help as needed.

Meaning Activity # 2 (7-9 minutes) • To practice the meaning of the Target Language

1)Project 11th slide of PPT on the board. 2)Ask students whether the sentences are polite or impolite. Elicit the answers (I would like.. , Can I have.. etc ) from SS. 3)Distribute SS Waitress-Linda HO2. 4)Give instructions as ' You are going to complete the sentences with the words in the blanks.' 5)SS will check their answers in pairs. 6)Monitor and help if necessary. 7)The Answer Key will be projected on the board. (Waitress-Linda A/K HO3)

Form Activity (5-7 minutes) • To highlight the form of the target language via a game.

-Inform SS that they are going to play a game. -Divide the class into two. Give names : Salad and Cake. -Once I will show SS a mixed sentence from a card, and the groups will try to put the words in order and speak it loud. I will give the card who was fast and correct.At the end, the winner will be determined by counting the cards the groups had.

Pronunciation Activity (Optional) (2-3 minutes) • To highlight the pronunciation of target language

1-Distribute SS the two drilling HOs. 2-The SS will make a sentence or ask a question using the HO . The all students will ask questions and answer one by one. 3-Model the first one with a student. Ask ICQs to check their understanding about the instructions.(Are you going to this alone? 4-Monitor and help for the weak students.

Controlled Speaking Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

1-Repair SS. 2-SS will be given a role play ( They will use the dialogues in HO1 ) 3-One of them will be the salesman/saleswoman the other one will be the customer. 4-Once they finish, nominate SS to act in front of the class. 5-Monitor and correct the mistakes on the spot.

Freer Speaking Practice (4-6 minutes) • To provide students with freer practice of the target language

1-Give SS the Menu HO4. 2-SS will work in pairs. 3-One of the pair will be the waiter / waitress and the other pair will be the customer. 4-They will swap roles. 5-Monitor and help if necessary.

Delayed error correction and feedback(Optional) (2-3 minutes) • To encourage SS to correct their own mistakes

1-While concluding the lesson, if time allows, I will write on the board the correct sentences and the mistakes I've heard. 2-SS will correct their own mistakes.
