Memorabilia- A Reading Lesson
Pre-intermediate level

Description

In this lesson, students practice their reading skills in the context of looking at famous memorabilia that has sold in auction. Students begin with a quick discussion, in pairs, about auctions and auction sites. Students will then practice skimming and scanning to answer questions about the text- before doing more in depth reading of the text. They will follow up with a discussion of famous movie props and how much they would be willing to pay for them at auction.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of memorabilia.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-6 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Project image of auction house. Prompt students with questions about where the picture is and what the people are doing. Elicit responses from students. Provide "auction" if necessary. Project image of ebay screenshot. "Do you know this website? What kind of website is it?" Elicit responses from students. Try to get them to provide "online auction" or provide. Project discussion questions and have students discuss in pairs.

Play a selection of Beatles Song "I Want to Hold Your Hand". Elicit name of band from the students. "Are you Beatles fans?" / "Do you like the Beatles?" "What's your favorite song?" Project image of John Lennon at piano. "Who is this?" "How much would you pay for his piano?" Project image of autographed picture. "How much would you pay for this autographed picture of the Beatles?" Elicit from students. Model discovery activity on the board. Hand out discovery activity and have students match the words to their definitions. Project feedback on board. Show students the HO with the text. What do you think it will be about? Predict. Students discuss in pairs.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Hand out questions first. Give students one minute to read. Hand out text, face down. Tell students that they will have 2 minutes to scan the text and answer the questions. Students discuss answers in pairs. Elicit answers. Ask students where they found the answer. Direct student attention to the numbers provided and the blanks on the paper. Students have 2 minutes to predict the prices and fill in the blanks. Read the text aloud and have students check their answers.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Have students turn their text over. Hand out the detailed questions and have students read them silently. Have students turn over their handout and start reading again. Highlight that they should read the whole text this time. Set six minutes for this task. Tell students to read the text again and check their answers. Give them three minutes to complete. Students discuss answers with their partners. Highlight that they should show each other WHERE they found the answers. Elicit answers from class.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Students discuss in pairs which item they like the most. Project images on board of famous movie props. Ask students where they are from and how much they'd be willing to pay for them.
