Description

In this lesson, the students will learn have to/don't have/can/can't in the context of the traffic rules in that the students clarify the meaning of the target language by guided discovery.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of can/can't/have to/don't have to in the context of Traffic rules.

Subsidiary Aims

  • Receptive skills:Reading and Listening for specific information.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

-I will show them a car picture and then I will start with a discussion about the rules of the traffic such as; -Do you drive?Do you enjoy driving?Do you always obey the rules of the road? What happens when people break them in Turkey? etc. -Write the answers of the last questions ' What happens when people break them in Turkey?' ( teach -fines,prison,points on their license-)

Exposure (6-8 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text

-After lead-in,I will give them a reading passage and say them it is about a Traffic School and I'll ask Which country is it about and Is a Traffic School a good idea ,why? -It will be a reading for specific information so,they will answer the 2 questions and as a class we will discuss the idea of 'Traffic School'. -I will lead the sts to text again but before that they will read 4 sentences about the text and try to mark them True or False.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

-After reading,I will hand out a worksheet and as pairs, students will match the 5 pictures with 5 statements in which they will see the target language. -After finishing, the pairs will swap and peer check. -Then,the sts will look at another matching part and they will do this exercise as pairs, too. -another peer check.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

-Stick the road signs to the board.Write the clues can/can't/have to. -Do the first and the second sentences as a model.(1.one red light:You have to stop,2.turn right:You can't turn right) -Ask them what happens if we don't obey the rules?or What happens if we breeak the rules? (we can be imprisoned,we can pay fines etc.) -then show the signs to sts and ask them what are these ? (traffic signs) do we have to obey these rules while driving? yes. -then one by one, stand the sts up and say them to match the words with the pictures. -After matching, the students will write suitable sentences under each road sign.(with can/can't/have to)

Controlled Practice(Listening) (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

-I will handout a worksheet and in the first part ,there is a brochure about driving in Britain.I'll say them to look at the borchure and understand the sentences before listening. -I will help them if they have any questions about the words and I will ask them, what is this brochure about?and what are you going to do while listening ?(they will complete the form with can/can't,have to or don't have to) -After completing, the sts peer-check and then as pairs ,they will look at the last ex.of the handout and they will write four sentences by using have to,don't have ,can and can't.

Semi-controlled Practice (7-9 minutes) • To provide students with a semi-controlled practice of the target language

-It will be game,I will divide them into two groups and tell them we will play a game, -I say them as group think about 3 things we have to do and 3 things we can't do in Turkey. -Give them clues:Driving, guns, bars and nightclubs, smoking, doctors and hospital. -After they are done with'have to' one by one from each group runs to the board and write his/her groups sentences. -After have to,the other sentences with'can't ' will be written one by one and the first group who finish first will be the champion.
