Description

In this lesson, sts will review lexis related to structures found in cities, practice reading & listening for specific details, and practice speaking for accuracy using functional (survival) English in the context of tourism; visiting the English city of York.

Main Aims

  • To provide practice of language used for helping tourists find their way in the context of visiting an English city

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice of tourist lexis in the context of visiting an English city
  • To provide specific information listening practice using a text about helping tourists find their way in the context of visiting an English city.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (8-10 minutes) • To set lesson context to visiting York, England and engage students

1. Personalize and introduce the context of visiting York, England by showing pictures from my trip to York with some of the major landmarks. 2. Elicit lexis related to landmarks in York (museum, castle, park, cathedral). Model, mark stress, and drill as needed keeping in mind this is simply review. 3. Use slide with facts of York to pre-teach vocabulary (The city of York is in the North of England...). Model and drill whole sentences.

Listening for gist in the context of conversations between travelers (4-6 minutes) • Give sts practice listening for gist.

1. Put up slide of 4 pictures A-D. 2. Chest HO & give instructions sts are listening to conversations and matching the pictures to the conversations. 3. Play audio 2.15 for sts to listen for gist and give them a chance to answer the HO. Have them check answers with a partner then check WC. 1.A, 2.B, 3.D, 4.C.

Listening for specific details- Conversations (5-6 minutes) • Give sts practice listening for details in the context of tourist conversations.

1. Chest HO. Give instructions that they are listening for specific details and show them where to put the answer. There is one correct answer out of 2 options. ICQ: Can the answer be C? --No, A or B. 2. Play tape 2.15 for them again and let them listen for answers. Check in PW & check WC. Answers: 1.B, 2.B, 3.B. 4.A 3. Drill Full sentences (answers).

Functional Language- Listening for Survival English (8-10 minutes) • Sts practice listening for specific details in the context of survival English for tourists.

1. Chest HO. Give instructions to sts they are listening and filling in the blanks. Make sure they know the first letter of the word is in the gap, and the answers are in the vocab box at the top of the HO. 2. Play audio 2.16 for sts to listen and fill in the answers. 2. Check answers in PW & then WC. Drill complete sentences

Practice Functional Language (10-13 minutes) • Sts practice using specific functional language in conversation

1. Disappearing Dialogue- Write script on the board from exercise 2. Assign sts PW and M/W. Give them instructions they will be reading off the script on the board their parts. ICQ: What part are you reading? Male. What part are you reading? Woman. As they practice speaking the sentences, erase parts from top to bottom. 2. Get feedback from sts. CQ: What is this conversation about?
