Description

In this lesson, students will learn a variety of different vocabulary about tourism and have many opportunities in which they can speak the target language. Students will also scan a text for specific information and for detailed comprehension, then complete controlled and semi-controlled activities.

Main Aims

  • To provide scan and detailed reading practice using a text about tourism

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification and review about vocabulary in the context of tourism

Procedure

Lead-in Activity (2-3 minutes) • To introduce students to the vocabulary words and useful phrases.

- Write "Useful Phrases" on the WB. -Chest HO (pg 96) - Instructions: " Use the phrases (point to WB) and talk about the pictures (show HO) with your partner." - While SS do HO, write 6 vocab words on the WB.

MFP of Vocabulary (3-4 minutes) • To allow students to elicit the vocabulary words and to clarify the definition of new words.

- Ask Ss about words on the WB. - For the ones they know, skip CCQs. - Show Lead-in Activity Pictures. Ask CCQs; tell form; dill chorally and individually

Gap-fill Prepositions (3-4 minutes) • To review preositions in the context of the target language.

- Instructions: Chest HO. "Fill in blanks with words. Work with your partner." - FB by asking WC the answers.

Matching Activity (4-5 minutes) • To ket students read the target phrases again

- Give demo. Tell S to read sentence 1 - Ask Ss which picture it is (answer: d) -Instructions: " Work with your partner. Match the 6 sentences to the pictures." - FB by asking WC their answers.

Semi-Controlled Writing Activity (5-6 minutes) • To give students a chance to write their own sentences in a semi-controlled activity

- T gives an example on WB: 1) I'm interested in...art and reading. 2) I'm bored with...school. - Instructions: "Write your own sentences by completing the 6 sentences in Activity 1. Work alone, no partners." [Ss work alone because they have to write sentences about themselves.] - "Discuss you sentences with your partner."

Scanning Activity (5-7 minutes) • To let students scan the text for specific pieces of information.

- Instructions: "Read the text. Match the pictures (HO pg96) to the paragraphs. Work with your partner." - Check by asking "Which picture is: medical tourism (e) disaster tourism (a) culinary tourism (c) literary tourism (d)

Detailed Comprehension Reading (7-8 minutes) • To allow students to read for detailed comprehension to re-order sentences.

- Instructions: "Look at Activity 2. Read the text and put the sentences in order. Work with your partner." - While Ss work, write answer key on WB - For FB, ask WC the answers and T fills in the answer key on the WB.

Reading for Comprehension (8-10 minutes) • To give students te chance to read the text for even more comprehension, and give their own opinions on it.

- Draw a cline on the WB (Label 1-5. Write "Very Acceptable - good - okay - bad - completely unacceptable" - Show pictures of "acceptable" and "unacceptable" and ask CCQs. - Ask Ss which picture goes on what part of the cline and stick them on the WB. - Instructions: "Look at the text. Write 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 next to each type of tourism. 1 is very acceptable. 5 is completely unacceptable. Work alone." - Ss work alone because the activity requires them to write their own opinions.

Controlled Speaking Activity (4-5 minutes) • To get students to practice speaking using the useful phrases about the TL in context.

- While Ss are working, write the useful phrases and 4 types of tourism on the WB. [ I think...is very acceptable/ I have some problems with.../ I think...is unacceptable] - Put Ss into groups of 4 before telling them directions. - Tell Ss, "Use the sentences (point to WB) and talk about your opinions on the 4 types on tourism."
