Description

In this lesson, students will practice their both receptive skill(reading) and productive skill(speaking).The lesson will be started by PPT projection which includes the pictures of the first man on the moon and the first air journey. Then, students will discuss about who the people are. After that, they will read the text of the first flight and the first man in the moon and answer some questions. The lesson will be followed by the speaking activities . While concluding the lesson, If time allows , the SS will have an opportunity to correct their own mistakes.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist, scan and detailed reading practice using the texts about the first man on the moon and the first air journey in the context of dates to remember

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a conversation and a discussion in the context of dates to remember

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

1-SS will be shown some photos via PPT about "the first man on the moon and the first air journey". 2-Tell SS will read about these men and SS will discuss each other what the pictures are about. 3-Get feedback

Pre-Teach Vocabulary (5-7 minutes) • To ensure the necessary vocabulary before SS read the given text and do the tasks.

1- Elicit the needed vocabulary and the parts of speech from the SS as below. -pioneer ,flight,stepped onto, enormous, aviation, compass,fog,leap , giant ,exploration, space, journey, altitude, lift off, landing , cliff , injury , air. 2- Show the stress in the word. 3- Write the vocab on the board and drill. 4-Check SS if they understand them or not.

Pre-Reading (5-7 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

1-Divide class into two groups. (tell students to stand up and take their images for a quick grouping. Armstrong/Blerio ) 2-Give Blerio 'first flight' image.Give Armstrong "moon" image. 3-Ask SS " Look at the pictures, who are the men?, what did they do? , when did they do it?" 4-SS discuss in their groups. 5- Get feedback.

While-Reading #1 (7-9 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading tasks

1-SS will be given the 2 different texts (one is First Flight , the second one is The first man on the moon and the "HO2 Gist task" and asked below questions. Every group will answer the questions using their own given text.(Moon or First flight) -When and where did the journey begin? -How long did it take? -Where did the journey end? -How far was the journey there? 2-SS will quickly read alone and answer the questions (give ss 2-3 minutes) 3-SS will check their answers in groups. 4-Monitor and help as necessary.

While-Reading #2 (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading tasks

1-SS will be asked to use the same HO2 but they will use the other side of the paper( the scan activity ) 2-Students read alone and answer the questions alone and then check in groups. 3-Monitor and help if they need. 4-The answers will be projected on the board.

While-Reading #3 (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading tasks

1-Distribute SS "HO3 Detailed Reading". 2-SS will read the text alone and answer the questions 3-Then they will check the answers in groups (they work with the same partner.) 4-The answers are outside and stuck on the walls. Tell SS they need to go outside to check their answers. 5-Monitor while they are outside.

Post-Reading (5-7 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

1-Pair students (one from each group) 2-They tell what they have learned to each other explaining their stories using the questions. 3-Monitor and write down the correct sentences and wrong sentences they told 4-Encourage them to use the past simple. (model if necessary) 5-Get feedback.

Freer Speaking Activity (1-2 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

1-SS will be given a question "Which one is more important exploration than the other one? Why?" 2- They discuss the question with their pairs. 3-Monitor and get feedback.

Delayed error correction and feedback (1-2 minutes) • To encourage SS to correct their own mistakes

1-While concluding the lesson, I will write SS's correct and the wrong sentences on the board. 2-SS will correct their own mistakes.
