Vocabulary Lesson / Weekend Break
Beginners level

Description

This is a vocabulary lesson with a reading part. We will try a more or less free speaking approach as a start with a brainstorm session about sightseeing in Istanbul. Students will retrieve the vocabulary necessary for comprehension of the text from a word search game. From this we will move on to productive use of the new vocabulary, a short insight into pronunciation and then follow on with reading for gist as well as scanning for precise information. Towards the end, we will try to get the students to voice some personal opinions within the set framework.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide practice of nouns in the context of travel and sightseeing

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist and scan reading practice using a text about Barcelona and Prague in the context of tourism

Procedure

Lead-In (4-6 minutes) • To set the context and elicit useful vocabulary.

I'll start the class with a short story about myself and not having been able to see much of the city - "Today, I want to talk about Istanbul. Because I have to be here, I hardly ever have the time to visit Istanbul. I have not seen anything. Can you tell me what I should see? What are places to visit in Istanbul?" If students don't latch on to this immediately, I'll drop some names like Hagia Sophia and hope to get some more response from there. We will record what students come up with on the whiteboard.

Presentation (3-5 minutes) • To introduce necessary vocabulary

Lexis Check Word Game: The game is presented on the whiteboard. The students will be asked to find the words with their partner and write them down on a hand-out with illustrations. Afterwards, they will be able to crosscheck their answers with a key, which we will do collectively, drilling and showing phonology as we go.

Presentation (4-5 minutes) • To produce the vocabulary just acquired in full sentences

Lexis revision: We are testing the ability of the students to produce the vocabulary they have just learned in full sentences. The instructions for this part are to „make sentences using these words.“ For instance: Istanbul has many castles. Or: The museum of modern art is in Karaköy. Assemble students in groups A, B, C to mix them up a little. Feedback in whole class.

Presentation (3-4 minutes) • To gain insight into pronunciation of newly acquired vocabulary.

I will model the words, drill them, show correct spelling and stress pattern with the projection, then give the students snippets and ask them to assign the words to the right column on the whiteboard, check if correct, correct if necessary, model, drill.

Pre-Reading Task (3-5 minutes) • Setting the context for the text

I'll show pictures of Barcelona and Prague with the projector and get some feedback („What do you know about these cities?“ - I doubt it will be that much, but maybe the students will be willing to share at least some assumptions. We'll record some of these on the whiteboard.

While-Reading Task (2-4 minutes) • Reading for gist

I'll chest the text and explain the instructions as follows: "Fill in the blanks in the text with these words", gesturing to the projection on the WB and the the blanks on the paper. I'll x-mark them in my copies to make sure they recognize them as such. This exercise is done in pair work and followed by WC feedback. Chest text again when getting feedback.

While-Reading Task (2-4 minutes) • To practice scan reading skills

Instructions: "Mark B or P for Prague or Barcelona." „Is this true for Prague or for Barcelona?“. Demo with the students. „There are beaches.“ „True for Barcelona? True for Prague?“ CCQ „What do you write?“. "Check with your partner.", get WC feedback for the board (1B, 2P...)

Post-Reading Task (4-6 minutes) • To encourage semi-controlled speaking practice

Do you know these cities? WC. Yes/No Who has been to Barcelona/Prague? WC Would you like to go for a weekend break? Why? with your partner - Would you like to go? Why? Get feedback from sts about their partners.
