Main Aims

  • To provide gist listening practice using a text about a real estate agent tells a couple about a flat in the context of finding a new home

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide students with practice of new vocabulary I. The context of describing a good neighborhood.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will write 'a perfect neighborhood' on the WB and ask students to tell me a few ways they would describe a perfect neighborhood and what it would include. I have printed several examples of which I will show them and drill with. I will show each picture in a shuffled rotation at least twice. I will post the pictures with their descriptions after the drilling exercise.

Pre-Listening (5-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text.

I want students to do a quick speaking exercise to prepare for listening to the audio portion of the lesson. I will give HO_1 and ask students 'what can you see in the picture?' The should describe the buildings in the neighborhood in the picture using words as from the warm up exercise. Once the WC has had an opportunity to describe what they see in the picture, They can describe in pairs what they see in the picture. I will write some examles of adjectives they need to use to describe what they see. Eg: "the city is small", "the neighborhood looks friendly". I will briefly explain a noun is a person, place, thing, or idea. I will then give a few example sentences : "The nightclubs are loud", "the streets are busy at night", and "the weather is cold". I will first ask which is the subject noun of each sentence then I will try to elicit the meaning of adjectives by asking what words describe the nouns. I will give HO_2 which will be a fill-in exercise for adjectives.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (9-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Students will listen to a recording of a description of Lexington. I will then ask them to make the sentences from ex 1 true for the city where they live. I will write the sentences on the WB/ After I will play recording 2.13 and students will find the places on the may. Students will check their answers in pairs. I will drill the students after each exercise as necessary.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Before I will play an audio 2.14 I will write 'the perfect flat' on the WB and ask students if the couple believed the flat in the audio is the perfect flat. I will also ask the if they know what an estate agency is and what do you buy at an estate agency? I will play the audio and ask them a few questions about the transcript. I will hand it out and play it again so they have something to follow along. After, I will write T and F on the board and read aloud the questions from ex. 2 of the SB page 63

Post-Reading/Listening (5-8 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

I will give students a HO_4. which contains a pictures of houses. Students will do A/B PW to ask the other student about the houses in their handout. "Is there a park?" "are there any markets?". Students will compare their answers and I will call on pairs to answer questions about their partners answers so they can practice the vocabulary.
