ELEMENTARY level

Description

The teaching practice 5 is mainly focusing on listening, and the sub aim is grammar, and speaking. Some vocabulary wil be pre-taught before the grammar. There is an introduction to the important evets in 20th century with a small quiz. Past simple questions, and negatives will be taught within grammar.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist listening, and listening for specific information through an audio about good old days.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of past simple questions and negatives in the context of good old days

Procedure

STAGE 1 (5 minutes) • Warm Up and Lead In

Warm Up: Play a song from Roger Miller- Good old days Ask the ss what they think is the topic of the day. Ss discuss O/C. Lead In: Write on board:What was the most important event of the 20th century? SS discuss.

STAGE 2 (10 minutes) • Pre-Listening & Vocabulary

Pre Listening: Regroup the ss into two. Deliver HO1 (quiz). Review the past forms of be (was/were), sell (sold), publish (published), die (died), come (came), land (landed), end (ended), have (had) used in HO1. They work in their groups to answer the questions. One ss from each group tells the group's answers. Play Audio T7.1 (CD 2:Track 37). SS check their answers. Vocabulary: ECDW to land (v.): Think about planes. When they touch the ground, what do we call this? pocket money (n.): Parents give us .......when we are going to scholl. Housework (n.): Our mothers do..............everyday. comics (n): Collection of caricatures like "Tommix"

STAGE 3 (15 minutes) • Grammar

Grammar: 1. Ask what they remember about the usage of Past Simple (used while talking about a finished action). Write an example sentence on the board by eliciting. EX: I graduated from university in 1997 . Elicit and show the form on the sentence. Subject+V2+obj Draw the time line, and show the period of the action. CCQs: Am I still studying? (no) Did I finish the university? (yes) When did I finish it? (In the past. 18 years ago) Teach/elicit the usage of "ago" in past simple. Show it on the timeline also (point of reference is the present, meaning “before now”. Using the above sentence (When did I finish it? (In the past. 18 years ago) introduce the WH questions by eliciting. 2. Ask "what are the other question words (Who, where, which, what, why, whose, when, how) Deliver HO2 (WH questions-Rules) Ask them to work in pairs, and answer the questions. Peer check. Elicit the form (Question word + did + subject + base verb) Deliver the HO 3 (forming WH questions) Also introduce "negatives" Ex: I did't have a car. I wasn't at school yesterday. Deliver HO3A (Negatives) 3. Give an example for Yes/No questions Ask one of the students: Did you have breakfast today? (Yes I did. No I didn’t) Did you go to school in Ankara? (Yes I did. No I didn’t) Did you finish university? (Yes I did. No I didn’t) Elicit some more examples. Try to get the form. (Did + subject + base verb ) Deliver HO4 (forming Y/N questions)

STAGE 4 (10 minutes) • While Listening

Gist Listening T7.2 (CD 2: 38) Deliver the HO 5 (Bill and granddad). Ask the ss "what is happening in the picture?" Ask about the other pictures on the left. Check if they understand the meanings of the vocabulary on the picture (tick box) Tell the ss they are going to hear Tommy and Bill talking about the past. Ask them to tick the things in HO5 they talk about. They work alone. Play the audio T7.2 (CD 2: 38) Peer check. W/C F/B Play the audio T7.2 (CD 2: 38) again for HO6 (Ex.3). SS work alone first, and then peer check. Monitor and play again if necessary. Group check W/C F/B Play again for specific information for HO7(Ex. 2). Work alone first. Peer check later.

STAGE 5 (5 minutes) • Post Listening

Ask the students how their lives were in the old days? Was it good or bad? how was life? Discuss in groups of three, and one person from each group tells the group's comman thoughts.
