Listening (Lottery)
upper-intermediate level

Description

In this lesson, students practice listening through gist, specific information and detailed understanding tasks. As a lead-in, the lesson starts with a common smartphone game where students are given four pictures and asked to find out the target word through combining the given letters. After the context is set, Ss have a quick pair discussion about their opinions on lottery winners. Next, they listen to the podcast and match the pictures of the winners with their stories. This is followed by a listening for specific information activity where students listen again and correct the mistakes in the sentences.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide gist, specific information and detailed listening practice using a podcast about winners' life stories in the context of lottery

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of lottery

Procedure

Lead-in (5-5 minutes) • To set lesson context (lottery) and engage students

T gives out the lead-in game to the Ss. Ss work in pairs and try to find out the word "lottery".

Pre-Listening (10-10 minutes) • To prepare students for listening via personal questions

(Lottery Handout 1, ex 1) T gives out the handout and asks the Ss to discuss the questions in pairs. WC FB (Lottery Handout 1, ex 2) T introduces the topic of the podcast, explaining the stories briefly and stimulating the Ss' top-down processing.

While-Listening #1 (5-5 minutes) • To provide students with a general understanding of the podcast

(Lottery Handout 1, ex 2) Ss listen to the podcast and match the pictures with the stories. WC FB. T shows before & after photos of the winners.

While-Listening #2 (7-7 minutes) • To provide students with a less challenging specific information listening task

(Lottery Handout 2, ex 3) In this exercise, there are "A"s and "B"s. Both of them are given the same sentences but different mistakes in different places. Ss listen to the podcast again and correct the mistakes in their sentences. Pair check. "A"s use "B"s handout and "B"s use "A"s handout as an answer key. T monitors and helps when needed.

While-Listening #3 (10-10 minutes) • To provide students with a detailed understanding listening task

(Lottery Handout 3, ex 4) Ss are given some true / false questions and listen to the podcast once more for detailed understanding. Pair check before WC FB.

Post-Listening (10-10 minutes) • To provide students with an opportunity to respond to the podcast via free speaking

(Lottery Handout 3, ex 5) Ss read the instructions and first think individually for 1 or 2 minutes. T uses snowball technique for grouping. Ss first discuss in pairs, and then two pairs come together to form a group and later two groups may join each other to form a larger group, depending on the number. Delayed correction if needed.
