Description

In this lesson the students will be introduced to the past perfect tense from a reading text in their lesson prior to this one and compare it with the past simple tense. They will do a controlled exercise to practice the form and meaning. They then will listen to a text about 'Reincarnation' and answer a gist question. They will read that text and choose the past simple or past perfect for different sentences. They will read the second part of the text and will have to write the appropriate tense (past simple or perfect). The students will then have some freer practice with the TL .

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of the past perfect tense in the context of incredible but true stories

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist reading practice using a text about Reincarnation in the context of 'incredible but true' stories
  • To provide specific information listening practice using a text about reincarnation in the context of for correction

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Ask Ss did they enjoy the stories in the previous lesson. Ask to summarise if they can and what strange stories have they come across. Put in to 2 groups and briefly discuss. Give an example of your own experience if Ss are stuck for ideas.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Clarification (6-8 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Give gap-fill exercise to class. Check in pairs and have them write the answers on the board. Reading Write the question ''Why did Jenny decide to travel to Ireland?" Give out the text (1 mins to read) Explain exercise- Choose the past perfect or the past simple. CCQ(1) Jenny Cockell was sure that she (1)lived/had lived before. When was she sure? Ans: don't know but sometime in the past. Which action happens first in time? Ans: She had lived before. Monitor Peer check and play the audio for correction

Controlled Practice (6-8 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Play or Read Text 2 Write questions on the board. "Who did Sonny think Jenny was?" "What do you think?" Discuss the answers. Explain next activity. write the correct tense. You are given the name of the tense. Check answers with your partner. Monitor Correct Note any difficulties in language so far

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Discuss the second part of the story. Discuss what feelings and emotions "Sonny" felt when this woman told him who she was. Confused, angry, upset, sad, proud (rabbit) happy or (on top of the world) What other emotions can you think of? With your partner, ask ''When was the last time you felt/ were____? What had happened? What had you done? (elicit and write on the board) Answer: ''The last time I felt ______was on Friday. I had been working all day and I had come home and there was no electricity in the apartment! Demonstrate with a student. Monitor and take notes for delayed correction.
