TP 5b: Travelling to Åland, Reading lesson

Description

In this lesson Ss will first watch a video clip of the Åland Islands in Finland. Teacher will elicit different activities from the video and teach them essential vocabulary for the reading tasks. Ss will read a teacher-made travel brochure of Åland with gist, scan and intensive reading techniques. Follow-up task will first further give practice in TL as a speaking task for accuracy and then, in the end of the lesson, Ss will write postcard from Åland using TL they have learned during the lesson.

Procedure

Lead-in (1-2 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

– T will show a video about Åland (1 min.) and ask the Ss to guess where is this place and notice what activities are there in the video.

Pre-Reading (7-9 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

– T will elicit activities from the video clip and write them on w/b. T will ask from the Ss would they like to travel to Åland and why. – T will teach the essential vocabulary for the reading task using eliciting, drawings and drilling of pronunciation.

While-Reading #1 (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading tasks

– T will give the Ss a brochure of Åland and ask them to choose the best description for the brochure (Ex. A in the worksheet). Ss read for gist, time limit 50 seconds. Check in pairs. Quick FB. – Ss will scan read and answer questions on ex. B & C in the worksheet. Time limit 2 minutes. Ss come to write the answers on w/b. Brief FB.

While-Reading #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed reading tasks

– Ss will read the text again, correct 11 errors in the summary and fill in the gaps IN PAIRS (ex. D). Answer key on w/b. – Ss will go to SMALL GROUPS and write down advantages and disadvantages of accommodation options in Åland (ex. E). W/C feedback.

Post-Reading (14-16 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

– T will give folded postcard handout to Ss. Ss will ask and answer questions on ex. F using previously learned "there is/there are" IN PAIRS. Ss can also create their own questions from the picture on "postcard". – T will show a sample postcard from Åland to Ss on w/b. Ss will write their own postcards using the TL of the sample postcard. T will monitor and help the Ss. Brief general FB. – Delayed error correction or pronunciation work if there's extra time.
