Description

This lesson is taken from pre-intermediate Face2face book p.64.In this lesson, students will practise reading for gist and details in context of cultural differences. It is divided into 6 stages which are: 1-lead in activity which will generate students interest in the topic by asking them to think of six places that may visitors visit in Turkey. 2- Pre -teach vocabulary: the teacher will introduce a set of lexis relate to cultural differences using pictures. 3-Pre-reading stage: the teacher will prepare students to read by asking them to guess the topic of the text from some pictures 4- While Reading 1 stage: the Students will practise reading for gist skill by skimming the paragraphs of the text to match it with the suitable headline. 5- While reading 2 stage: students will practise reading for details. 6- Post-reading stage: students will discuss the most surprising things in the text in groups.

Main Aims

  • By the end of the lesson, students will have given the chance to practise reading for gist and specific details by reading a text about cultural differences in different countries.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice in a set of vocabulary concerned with cultural differences

Procedure

Warmer (4-5 minutes) • To encourage the students and to give them an opportunity to introduce themselves

1- Teacher will introduce herself by drawing a flower on the board which will have four petals. 2- In each petal,the teacher will write one thing about herself . 3- Teacher will ask the students to figure out what are they referring to? 4- Students will draw their own flowers. 5- Students will show their flowers to their partners.

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To introduce the topic and to create interest in the topic

1- Students will be divided into groups depending on the number of attendance. 2-Teacher will show a picture of man who will visit Turkey in the next week. 3- Students will think of places that he may visit. 4-Students will discuss why the tourist may visit these places. 5- Students will share their choices with the whole class.

Pre-teach the vocabulary (8-10 minutes) • To help students to grasp a better understanding of the text

1- Teacher will stick the pictures which clarify the meaning of the new vocabulary on the board. 2- The teacher will give the students cards with the new vocabulary. 3- Students will stick their cards under the pictures which related to their words on the board. 4-The teacher will check the answers with the whole class. 5-Students will repeat the vocabulary chorally after the teacher. 6- The teacher will check the students understanding using miming

Pre-Reading (3-5 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible.

1- The teacher will divide the students into two groups. 2-The teacher will ask the students to look at the title and the pictures to guess what is the text about. 3- Students will share their predictions to the whole class.

While-Reading #1 (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist reading

1- Students will stay in the same groups. 2- Teacher will give each group three headlines and paragraphs . 3- Students will skim the paragraphs quickly to match the headlines with the paragraphs. 4- The teacher will give the students a photocopy from the original text to check their answers.

While-Reading #2 (9-11 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed reading task

1- Teacher will ask students to read seven sentences related to the text. 2- Teacher will ask students to read the text individually and find out which of the sentences that they have read are true and which are not. 3- Students will compare their answers in pairs. 4- Teacher will check the answers with whole class.

Post-Reading (5-7 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they have learned

1- Students will work in two groups. 2- Students will choose the four things that they think are the most surprising. 3- Teacher will pair the students up to compare their answers. 4- Teacher will get the feedback.
