Description

In this lesson students will practice discussion language: agreeing and disagreeing politely and will have free speaking practice for fluency. They will also have listening for specific information practice in the context of children's eating habits.

Main Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of discussion language: agreeing and disagreeing politely

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide specific information listening practice in the context of children's eating habits

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Teacher asks students (in pairs) to think of some things their parents made them do when they were children and some things they let them do. In feedback, one or two students give a brief summary of what they've talked about.

Pre-listening stage (5-8 minutes) • To prepare students for listening

In pairs, students talk about what they see in the photo and make necessary assumptions about what people doing. To prepare students better for the listening, teacher asks students to try to predict the answers before the listening starts.

Exposure #1 (5-8 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through listening

Students listen to the recording and answer the questions. In feedback, answers are confirmed.

Exposure #2 (3-5 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through listening

In pair, students fill in the gaps and then listen to the recording to check their answers.

Useful Language #1 (5-8 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

In two teams, students categorise 12 expressions under either "Agreeing" or "Disagreeing" columns. The team which fineshes first, runs to the board and sticks their answers. In feedback, answers are confirmed and clarified.

Useful Language #2 (3-5 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

In pairs, students fill in the gaps with words. Once done, teacher distributes the answer key for students self-check.

Productive Task (8-10 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target language

In pairs, discuss who they agree with most.. In feedback, one two or two students reports to class.
