TP 4 Technology Vocabulary Lesson

Description

In this lesson, students will learn a large number of vocabulary words to prepare them for subsequent lessons on speaking and grammar.

Materials

Abc whiteboard, paper and pen

Main Aims

  • To provide review and clarification of technology related words in the context of energy, machines, medicine, science and information technology.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy and fluency speaking practice in a drills and dialogues in the context of energy, machines, medicine, science and information technology.

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To activate the Ss attention and introduce the context.

T will play a one-minute video about how the physical office desktop has evolved over the years. After the video, T will show a few pictures representing other areas of technological advance and Ss will be paired by category. They will then be asked to discuss how different life might be today if there had been no technological advances in that particular category. T will nominate for FB.

Vocabulary Introduction (3-5 minutes) • To introduce the vocabulary.

Ss will receive a group of cutouts and be directed to work with their partner to match the word with the picture. Students will cross-check their work with other pairs before giving W/C FB.

Understand and Define (8-10 minutes) • To get students to understand the context and meaning of the vocabulary.

1. Ss will be given a matching handout and asked to match the word to the definition. They will work alone, then check their answers with their partner. AK will be projected on the board. 2. Ss will be given a HO with four categories and asked to work with their partners to complete the word webs. Ss will cross-check with other pairs. AK will be projected on the board.

Pronunciation Practice (8-10 minutes) • For Ss to learn and practice correct pronunciation of the vocabulary.

1. Ss are given an additional HO and asked to work in pairs to identify the main stress and part of speech in each word or phrase. They are encouraged to pronounce the words as they try to determine stress. T gives and drills examples. 2. T plays the solutions listening activity and Ss self-check their work. AK is handed out. 3. Ss listen a second time to the recording. T pauses between each word and assists the drilling.

More Practice (2-3 minutes) • To work give students an opportunity to check their understanding of the vocabulary.

1. Ss are given a HO and directed to work alone and underline the correct alternative in the sentences. 2. Ss. will check their answers with their partner. 3. AK will be handed out.

Speaking (8-10 minutes) • To get Ss to use the target language.

1. Ss will work in PW/GW depending on class size, and will be told to make up a crazy story, using a select number of words determined by the T. 2. Ss will have STT while they prepare their stories and then each pair or group will share their story W/C. 3. After all pairs/groups have shared, T will give any corrections necessary. 4. Finish with a funny technology video.
