Main Aims

  • To provide review and clarification of time references in the context of time in general and time zones

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist and scan reading practice using a text about the history of time zones

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-6 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Write down the answers 1. How much time do you spend cleaning your home? 2. How much time do you spend getting ready in the morning? 3. How much time do you spend getting to ITI? 4. How much time do you spend shopping for food every week? 5. How much time do you spend exercising every week? 6. How much time do you spend brushing your teeth?

Focus on meaning (3-4 minutes) • To draw student's attention to the meaning and use of the TL

"Today we will talk about time" Writing on WB 'Time' and '24h in a d.' "Do the second exercise also' Check in pairs WC feedback: elicit answers "chorally"

Focus on form (2-3 minutes) • To focus on the form of the TL

T asks ss to look at the expressions. T elicits first gap. Ss check in pairs T writes answers on the WB.

Semi-controlled practice (writing) (6-7 minutes) • To practice form of the TL

Ss choose 5 questions and write down the answers. T shows that prepositions are in, at, on and reminds to use them ICQ: Do you have to write down your answers? Yes How many questions do you answer? 5

Semi-controlled practice (7-9 minutes) • To concept check and provide speaking practice

SS check with their partners. Ask each other why? "Give me another example..." T use monitoring to find interesting answers and errors of form and pronunciation. T asks WC each question and then why? T does DEC for form

Focus on pronunciation (2-4 minutes) • To highlight phonological features of TL

T elicits correct pronunciation. Gives good model and drills words with which he found difficulties during previous monitoring.

Pre-Reading (2-3 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it relevant

Ss read the questions in pairs. They discuss together. WC FB

While-Reading #1 (5-6 minutes) • To provide students with gist reading task

Students read the text and and match the headings with the paragraphs. Check in pairs. T writes numers 1-5 on the board and asks random ss for the heading they've chosen.

While-Reading #2 (4-5 minutes) • To provide students with reading for specific information task

Ss first read the statements, and then go back to the text. Check in pairs. Write answers on the board. Elicit correct ones for F.

Post-Reading (5-6 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned, and to use the present perfect

Instruct the ss to work in pairs and answer the questions in 3B. Give them ample time (as much you got) to speak. Monitor for interesting answers. Ask random ss as FB
