Main Aims

  • For the Ss to notice the form of the grammar structure: " Comperatives ", using some gap filling exercises in the context of " A trip to Thailand ".

Subsidiary Aims

  • Helping the students practise skimming and scanning in the context of " a trip to Thailand ".

Procedure

Warm-up / Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • Setting the lesson context and engage the students in the activities.

The teacher will review the context which was set in the previous lesson asking some questions to the students.

Pre - Grammar Teaching Stage (10-15 minutes) • Preparing the students for the context of a trip to Thailand and making it much more understandable for the students through teaching a couple of new vocabulary or the blocking vocabulary.

1- The teacher will put some flashcards on the board to teach " some vocabulary " to the students and will give a piece of paper to the students, including a few of sentences which describe the opposites of the words on the board. 2- Then, the teacher will get the students to stand up and have them match the opposites of the words. 3- For feedback, the teacher will check the answers with the whole class. 4- After checking the matching part with the WC, the teacher will put some pictures on the board, including two cars. One of them is named as " Şahin " in Turkish, and the other one is " Mini Cooper ". The teacher will use the discussion to elicit some comparisons using adjectives such as faster, more expensive, more comfortable, older, newer, cheaper...E.g. ( The Mici Cooper is more expensive than the Şahin ). 5- Then, the teacher will show some pictures to the students and will produce some sentences with them using the Target Language structure. 6- After the elicitation part, the teacher will write some sentences on the board asking some questions to the students about the pictures. 5- At the last stage of the pre-reading, the teacher will try to teach the pronunciation of the Target Language and have the students repeat the pronunciation of the TL.

Test #1 (3-5 minutes) • Activating the schemata of the students to use their prior knowledge about the topic.

1- The teacher will give them a piece of paper, including some incomplete definitions about the " comparatives " to complete the rules. ( The teacher will give 3 minutes to the students for this exercise ).

Teach (3-5 minutes) • Clarifying the areas of the target language in which the students have some difficulties in understanding the target language structure.

1. The teacher will give the answer sheet to the students. 2. The teacher will ask the students to check their answers and see if they don't get any part. 3. After this part, the teacher will give a piece of paper, including some adjectives which need to be changed to their comparative forms. The students will do this part individually. After they have finished this activity, the teacher will ask the students to write their answers on the white board. For this part, the teacher will give 5 minutes to the students.

Test # 2 (7-14 minutes) • Checking the students's understanding of the target language through two reading texts, which are about " Bangkok and Phuket ".

1- The teacher will give a piece of paper to the students, including two texts about " Bangkok and Phuket " to have the students realize and notice the target language structure in the texts. The students will scan the texts for specific information. After reading the texts, they are supposed to do " fill in the blanks with the comparative form of the adjectives used in the texts ". The purpose of the teacher is that he wants the students to see how the target language is used in texts properly. It will help them understand the TL structure meaningfully. ( The teacher will give 5 minutes to the students. When they are done, the teacher will have each student write their answers on the board. The students will work on the reading part individually. After all of these things, the teacher will let them check their answers making them listen to a listening track. This feedback type will help them enhance their listening skills ( receptive skill ). 2- After they have done the given exercises, the teacher will give them another exercise, which is about checking their reading comprehension. The students will do True / False activity. The teacher will tell them that there is only one " False " statement and try to find it. The aim of this part is to evaluate whether the students have understood the use of the target language structure in the texts or not. 3- As a last activity, the teacher will give them another fill in the blanks activity, which is about their city/town, and their life to complete the sentences using the comparatives appropriately.

Free Practice ( Back Up Practice ) (4-6 minutes) • Enhancing the productive skills ( writing ) of the students having them use the comparatives.

1- The teacher will give them a piece of paper, including the following instruction " Write 3 more sentences about your town/city or your life and discuss them with your partner ". The aim of the teacher here is to enhance the productive skills of the students. ( Firstly, they will write some sentences, it means that they will improve their writing skills and then they will discuss their sentences with their partners, which means that they will speak and produce some sentences ).
