Description

In this lesson Ss will learn about the Past Simple tense. As a secondary aim Ss will be practicing their Listening and Pronunciation Skills. The context of the lesson will be life of Oprah. Past Simple tense verbs will be used to analyze her past accomplishments.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of past simple tense.By the end of the lesson Ss should be able to use Past Simple tense properly for regular verbs.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide an opportunity for the students to develop their listening skills through a listening practice about pronunciation.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Put the photos on the board or chest them and ask the SS what they remember from the text about Oprah Winfrey. Listen to the SS and ask them if the text refers to the past or not.

Introduction to the Simple Past Tense (3-4 minutes) • To provide a model of the task and highlight the regular verb in the Simple Past tense

SS will be given a text and they will be asked to read the text alone and underline the verbs which refer to the past in pairs. Doing this exercise, they will have an overall idea on the Simple Past form of the regular verbs. After the SS finish the exercise, T gives a whole class.

Discovering Simple Past Tense (10-12 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to discover the meaning, function and form of Simple Past Tense

SS will be given four cut-ups; -Positive Form -Negative Form -Yes-No Questions -Wh-Questions and twelve statements. SS will be asked to find out to correct form of Simple Past Tense for each sentence. SS will work in pairs.They will be asked to write sentences on the board and drill them as soon as they complete in pairs.Take FB and Use CCQ if needed.

Regular Verbs practice (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with a less challenging exercise about regular verbs in Simple Past.

Tell the ss that they will fill the crossword puzzle with the past form of the verbs; **watch, interview, study, talk, live, start, earn, open, work and clean** The SS will work in PAIRS and check with another PAIR. After finishing the exercise, give them the answer key. W/C F/B if needed.

Regular Verbs Practice#2 (5-6 minutes) • To provide the students with a more challenging exercise about Simple Past

Tell SS that they have to listen an audio and fill in the blanks in the sentences related to the the text about Oprah Winfrey. The SS work alone and then check in PAIRS. Monitor the SS and by whole class feedback, do error correction referring to the guided discovery handout if needed.

Regular Verbs Practice #3 (5-6 minutes) • To provide the students with a more challenging exercise about Simple Past

Tell the ss that they will be given a wordbox which includes regular verbs in their past form and a 3-column chart which has three different pronunciation categories (/t/, /d/ and /ıd/). Draw the chart on the board as well to give one example for each category. Play the verbs to the class and the SS categorize the verbs according to their endings (eg. worked /t/). The SS work alone. Then whole class feedback.

Follow-up (7-9 minutes) • To provide an opportunity for students to develop their speaking skills and to strenghten their ability to use Simple Past

The SS play the game 'find someone who..' in this follow up activity. Tell them that they will ask questions with the help of the clues included on the chart and try to find students who did the actions. The SS work alone, go outside of the class and try to complete their chart by asking questions in Simple Past Tense. Monitor the SS during the activity and take notes of good examples and errors. Then nominate students to give names of the students for each action on the chart. Correct the errors on the board.
