Description

In this lesson, students will have an opportunity to review the "comparatives and superlatives in the context of "Machines". At the beginning of the lesson the students will be asked to find and underline the comparatives and superlatives in the given text "James May's 20th Century". After that, they will have some controlled practices and freer practices. While concluding the session, if time allows, SS will correct their own mistakes.

  • To provide clarification and practice of comparatives and superlatives in the context of "machines"

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a discussion in the context of "machines"

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-7 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

1-Regroup SS -tell them make a straight line according to your length. 2- I will project some pictures on the board and (use ECDW ) ask SS "Please describe the things in picture". 2- After eliciting the adjectives , I will ask SS to compare 2 or more things in order to elicit the comparatives and superlatives. 3- Then, I will ask them to compare an aeroplane and a motorbike. 4-Ask CCQs SS" Is aeroplane cheap? No and Is motorbike slow? No 5-Then I will project three people and ask SS to describe their features and try to elicit some comparisons.

Meaning Activity (4-5 minutes) • To provide the meaning of "comparatives and superlatives" through the text James May's 20th Century.

1-How is the weather like in İzmir in summer? Hot. How about in Cyprus? Hotter. But, in the desert it is the ???Hottest.(CCQs) can you please spell that I can write on the board. 2-Distribute the text of James May's 20th Century HO. 3-SS work alone to find and underline the comparatives and superlatives in the text. Give SS 2 min. 4-SS will be asked to check the answers in pairs. 4-Elicit SS's answers and write them on board for feedback. 6- 7-Drill chorally the whole sentences.(do backchaining if necessary)

Form Activity (8-10 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

1-Does anyone can tell me what happens if we want to compare one or two things , or more.Try to elicit the form of the comparative and superlative adjectives.(We can change the form of adjectives by adding the -er or -est) ECDW 2-Martha is the happyer than John. Is this sentence correct? No. Why? If we use a comparative adjective there shouldn’t be article “the”. It is used with superlative adjectives.(the happiest).Besides, if the adjective finishes with 'y' , y becomes 'i', happier. 3-Re-pair SS. Give each group two sets of alphabet cards. 3-Tell SS they are going to play a game and I will say some adjectives (base form), and the groups must "spell" (with the letters) the correct comparative or superlative, if they are correct they can run to the board and write a sentence. 4-The words are given below a) intelligent more intelligent (comparative) most intelligent (superlative) b) easy(base) easier (comparative) easiest (superlative) c) dirty(base) dirtier (comparative dirtiest (superlative) d) far(base) further(comparative) furthest (superlative) 5-The winner will be the one who writes them all correctly and fast.

Controlled Practice -1- (5-7 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

-Distribute SS Rules cut-ups -Put SS in groups -Give instructions " You will make two rules from these cut-ups." -Give SS 3 min. -When time is up, groups check each others' answers. -Monitor and help. -Tell SS the answers are under their chairs!(if I have a chance to put there, otherwise I will project the answers )

Controlled Practice -2- (7-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

-Distribute SS Ex.5a Gap-Fill HO. -Do the first one as a demo. -SS will complete the statements with the given comparative / superlative adjectives words alone.Give SS 3-4 min. -They check their answers in pairs -Monitor and help if they need. -SS will be asked to fill in the blanks on the board.

Freer Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

1-Group SS in 3.(can change according to the number of SS) 2-SS choose an invention from the last 100 years. 3-One person in each group will write three or more sentences created by whole group to describe how this invention has changed our lives. 3-Monitor and encourage them to use comparatives and superlatives in Ex.5A and help with vocabulary. 4-Re-group SS. One person from each group forms new groups to discuss the sentences. 4-Once they are ready,nominate one S from each group to share their sentences with the class. 5-SS vote for the best/worst inventions.

Delayed error correction and feedback (2-3 minutes) • To encourage SS to correct their own mistakes

1-While concluding the lesson, I will write on the board SS's mistakes on the board. 2-SS will correct their own mistakes.
