In this lesson, students practice simple present in the affirmative by answering the questions, "Where do you live?", "Where do you live?", "Who do you live with?", and "How do you get to work?" Students practice reading for gist, reading for details, and speaking in small groups.

Main Aims

  • Simple present - affirmative

Subsidiary Aims

  • Reading and speaking

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Show Ss flashcards and elicit answers. Write words on WB as necessary. NB: To elicit "alone," compare two flashcards. Explain "alone" as meaning "no one else is there." Drill and write on WB. NB: Show S flashcard for walking, elicit "walking." Ask Ss for another way to say "walking." Assuming Ss are not familiar with TL, show flashcard for foot, elicit "foot." Explain "on foot" as a synonym for walking. Drill and write on WB.

Pre-Reading (5-7 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Put Picture 1 on WB. Ask Ss what they see. Play recording 1.73, listen and repeat. Drill for pronunciation. Show Table 1 on WB and repeat with class. Put Table 2 on WB. Instruct pairs to put pieces in the gaps on the table. Model with one pair. Pass out one piece of HO 1 to each pair. Drill table for pronunciation.

While-Reading #1 (4-5 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Put pictures A,B,C on WB. Ask Ss to describe what they see. Elicit relevant vocabulary words. Write 1, 2, 3 on WB under pictures. Show Ss HO 2 and tell them they will read by themselves and match each text with one picture. ICQ: Ask S, "What will you do with this text?" Elicit reading and matching text to pictures. Give each S a copy of HO 2 and tell them they have one minute. When Ss are finished, ask WC to give, review, and justify their answers.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (15-18 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Put HO 3 up on board. Tell Ss they will work in pairs to answer all of the questions. Ask WC for answer to the Q1 and model writing the entire sentence on WB. Give one copy of HO 3 to each pair. When pairs are finished, invite them to write answers on WB. Review and justify answers with WC.

Post-Reading/Listening (7-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Elicit Qs, "Where do you live?", "Who do you live with?", "Where do you work?", and "How do you get to work?" from Ss. Put HO 4 up on board. Model question and answer for number one with a student. Demonstrate writing their name, asking them a question, and writing the whole answer on HO 4. ICQ: Ask S, "What do you ask me now?" Elicit, "Where do you live?" Answer, "I live in a flat." Ask S, "What do you do now?" Elicit, "Write down 'He lives in a flat.'," and continue. Tell Ss they will work in pairs to ask each other these questions and they will write down what their partner says. Give each S a copy of HO 4.

Gap fill (10 minutes) • Continue practicing speaking

If pairs finish early from previous exercise, invite them to form groups of four and continue by introducing and describing their partners to the other pairs.
