How to Become a Millionaire

Description

In this lesson students will learn the grammar for "should/have to/must" through Guided Discovery in the context of job/career/becoming a millionaire.

Materials

Abc whiteboard, paper and pen

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and review of should/have to/must (obligation) in the context of becoming a millionaire.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy and fluency speaking practice by creating and practicing sentences with the target language.

Procedure

Warm-up (3-5 minutes) • To introduce the context and get students ready to participate

1. The logo for the game show "Who Wants to be a Millionaire" will be shown on the board. 2. A new title "How to Become a Millionaire" along with a sound clip from the original show will play. 3. Ss will be asked to spend 1 minute brainstorming in pairs about ways to get rich. 4. Ss will share their ideas and will vote for a favorite. 5. As FB is given, T will try to incorporate "must/have to/should" in the mirroring of Ss answers.

Grammar Introduction (4-6 minutes) • To help elicit meaning and form for "must/have to/should"

1. Ss are given a HO where they will work alone to match sentences with their possible meaning. 2. T will check work during monitoring and direct Ss to somebody with the correct answers. 3. Ss will then place those sentences into a semi-form box categorized by "+", "-", and "?". 4. Answer key will be projected and Ss will check their own work. 5. T will then check for understanding of concept with the following questions: a) Which sentence means something is not necessary (not important)? b) Which sentence means something is necessary? c) In sentence 3: is it advised or necessary to have a clear idea? d) In sentence 4: is it asking if a college degree is important or advised? e) In sentence 5: is enjoying your work necessary or advised? f) In sentence 6: is taking too many holidays not advised or is it not necessary? g) In sentence 7: is it important or advised not to worry?

Meaning Activity (7-8 minutes) • Help the Ss understand the meaning of "must/have to/should".

1. Ss will be given a new handout with incomplete sentences, and asked to use the previous handout to see if they get the answers within 2 minutes. 2. Ss will be told that the answers are in the hallway, and that they should work together with their partner to find all of the answers and write them down. 3. Answers will be projected on the board.

Form Activity (8-10 minutes) • To show students the form of "must/have to/should"

1. Ss are given a HO with an empty "form" and word bank and asked to complete in PW. 2. Blank form is projected on the board and Ss take turns filling it in on the board with pen. 3. Answers are confirmed then models are shown and drilled. 4. This is done for "must/have to" first, followed by "should".

Grammar Practice (4-4 minutes) • To check understanding of lesson

1. T will quickly check that Ss know mosquito, mosquito net, and bite just by asking, but will ECDW for malaria and raccoon. 2. Ss are given a handout with a story about the worst jobs in the world and asked to read alone, and circle the correct choice. 3. T will monitor, and direct Ss to a S with the correct answer. 4. T will also project answers on the board.

Continued Grammar Practice (5-5 minutes) • Continued work toward a complete understanding of the concept

1. Ss are broken into pairs for this exercise each pair will only complete a few sentences. 2. Ss are given a handout with sentences and prompts and asked to complete their pair's assigned sentences. 3. Ss are given an answer sheet to check their work and see the answers to the questions they didn't get to answer in their pair.

Speaking (5-7 minutes) • To allow students to use the practice language in a speaking activity

1. T will model the exercise by talking about teaching. 2. T will give instructions for the students to spend 1-2 minutes alone, thinking about their own job and their dream job, then to share with a partner at least three qualities that are/aren't important for these jobs. 3. T will nominate Ss to share their answers with the class.
