Teaching Practice 6
Pre-intermediate level

Description

In this lesson, students will listen to a radio programme about a new TV game show with contestants from all over Europe, guess what the programme will be about, have gist and detailed listening. This will be followed with the introduction of compound nouns with numbers and practise some. Finally, they will have a short speaking, discussing whether they would like to go into space, with a delayed error correction feedback in the end.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed listening practice using a text about space tourists in the context of a radio programme

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice of compound nouns with numbers in the context of a radio programme

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-7 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T introduces "Game Show" and asks whether Ss know any game shows. After eliciting a few answers, show the Game Show Questionnaire to Ss and do the first question as an example. T gives the questionnaire to Ss. In pairs, Ss ask&answer the questions in the questionnaire. T gets some WC feedback.

Pre-Listening#1 (3-4 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible (pre-teach vocabulary)

T tells them that they are going to listen to a radio programme but first s/he wants to check some words. Introduce the words "blast off, contestant, game show, museum, rocket and tourist" and drill them. Stick the words and the pictures of the words on WB. Ask Ss to match the pictures with the words (exercise 1). Do the first one as an example. Post the AK on the wall. (If there is any confusion ask some CCQs.)

Pre-Listening#2 (3-4 minutes) • To predict the contents of the listening

Ask Ss to work in pairs and try to predict from the words what the listening will be about. Elicit some guesses and note some ideas on WB (mind-map). BUT don't confirm or deny any ideas yet.

Gist Listening (5-6 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist

Ss listen to the radio programme and work out the story. After listening, in pairs, they talk how close the story is to their predictions and share any new ideas. WCF - check how each of the ideas on the board fit in the recording and elicit any new ideas.

Detailed Listening (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed listening task

T hands out the questions (exercise 2). Ss listen and answer the eight questions. After listening, first they check in pairs. Then get WCFB. Ask them some questions about how they got their answers to check whether they listened to the right bits of information when necessary. (T can play a second time, if necessary)

Language Focus (8-9 minutes) • To introduce compound nouns related to the listening

- T shows three correct and three incorrect compound nouns on the computer and asks Ss to guess which ones are correct in pairs in order to see what they might already know. Then hand out the tape script and ask them to check whether they guessed right or not. Get WCFB. T posts some other compound nouns and asks Ss to put them together. Ss work in pairs. Anticipated CCQs: million-dollar house: Can you see plural s in the first part of the compound? (No) Is it an expensive house? (Yes) five-star hotel: Is it a comfortable hotel? Is it cheap? - T hands out Exercise 3 to have some more practice with compound nouns. In pairs, Ss complete the sentences with the correct compound nouns. Post AK in the classroom.

Post-Listening (5-7 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

In small groups, Ss will discuss the question "Would you like to go into space? Why or why not?" Get WCF, and delayed error correction, as necessary. If time left, Ss are asked to change their groups and keep on discussion answering new questions "Who would you like to go with? and when?" In the end, Ss tell whose answer they liked most and why.
