Main Aims

  • To provide gist, detailed and scan reading practice using a text about April fool's day in the context of practical jokes conducted by big companies, TV stations and news papers on the public

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a discussion and description in the context of April fool's day

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

First, I am going to tell the students about a personal experience with practical jokes to get to the point where I would elicit the word "practical jokes". then I am going to ask them whether there is a particular day specialized for such jokes, and that's where I'd elicit April fool's day. If the students find it difficult to remember "April fool's day" or they don't have previous knowledge of the day I will put hints on the board by writing the phrase without the vowels. Then, drill "play a practical joke" because it is one of the main terms used in the reading text.

Before reading (2-5 minutes) • to raise students' interest in the reading text

- First learners will be given pictures of the April Fool practical jokes described in the text. Then they will be asked to discuss in groups what the April Fool jokes are.

While reading 1 (3-5 minutes) • to provide practice of reading for gist

- students will be given the text for which they are going read within a minute to match the the parts of the paragraph, which describe the practical jokes, to the images.

while reading 2 (7-10 minutes) • To provide learners with practice of reading for details

Students will be divided into two groups, group A and group B -Then one group will be asked to read the first two practical jokes texts in the paragraph while the other will read the other two practical jokes paragraphs. - After that, each student from group A will be paired with a student from group B. -In the end, in each pair every student will describe the practical jokes they have read about to their partner, then they will both decide which one is their favorite

while reading 3 (7-10 minutes) • to provide learners with practice of reading for specific information

Learners will be given questions in which they will have to answer by reading the text again. then they will check their answers in pairs.

Extension of the reading topic (7-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice where they would discuss the topic of the reading

-Learners will be asked to produce their own April fool plan. They will be divided into three groups where they will discuss: who they are going to plan the practical joke for, what they would use in the plan and how they are going to do it. These discussion questions will be written on the board. - Then they will be provided with a text which will contain an example of an April Fool plan. - After that, each group will presents their plan to the others - In the end, learners will vote for the best plan
