Description

On this lesson students will learn about the present continuous in "The Meeting" context. The lesson starts with description of jobs and photos. Students will match the job pictures with their names.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Teacher pastes flash cards of different jobs. The teacher gives the students names of the jobs. In groups: Students try to guess what are these jobs and paste the names next to each job. The teacher gives them the answers afterwards to check.

Exposure (3-3 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Teacher models one sentence. "Adel is speaking to Fatima. Teacher: draws a time line to show the students when the action occurred. St. Use cards to reorder the sentences below. Ex: I am standing in the class. The students are sitting on the chair.

Highlighting (5-7 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Teacher carries out action. Teacher takes out a pen and writes on the board "I am writing". "I am sitting" and " Iam walking". The teacher keeps walking around the class and calls one of the students to walk with. The teacher says: "Adel is walking". "I am walking". "We are walking". Then teacher models the following activity. Teacher goes out of class and takes a look around and acts of taking notes of what is happening outside then comes in telling what he saw. He is sitting (pointing at someone actually sitting) and few other examples what people are doing outside the class. Teacher asks students to do the same for 30 seconds and come back with as many sentences as possible. Sts. come back and report what they saw in groups. Teacher pastes cards to show the rule for the Present Continuous:( V. Be + V. ing) In groups: Sts. look at the pictures of the jobs and make sentences describing the pictures. Ex. The actor is smiling.

Clarification (4-6 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Teacher gives a handout with different questions to show invitations . The teacher gives an example on the board. "Can you come with me to the supermarket?" No, I can't. I am writing my homework." Students move around and ask one student. The other student must be able to give an excuse using the present continuous.

Controlled Practice (5-6 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Teacher hands out a picture to students. Sts. discuss where are these people. Then teacher asks "What is Frank's problem?" Teacher puts the audio on. Sts. listen to the audio and then discuss the answer. Sts. listen again and solve the questions in groups. Teacher: hands out an activity where students say who said this. In groups: Sts. try to guess the answer according to the pictures.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Teacher explains this task. It is a miming game using the present continuous. Teacher divides the class into two groups. Students are given slips which have questions. At the beginning, each group will choose a team leader to begin. Students try to guess what their partner is saying.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Students try to give as many different excuses as they can why the person calling can’t speak to the person they want to, e.g. “He is meeting a client” or “He is flying to New York in 5 minutes”. This can be used for present
