Description

In this lesson, Ss will have an opportunity to improve their vocabulary and speaking skill. At the beginning of the lesson, to introduce the topic, the Ss will discuss the question "Have you got what it takes to be a millionaire?" in pairs. After that, they will do a survey about the context (Millionaires). Then, they are going to learn some confusing words such as job/work, listen/hear, remember/remind, fun/funny, forget/leave. By the end of the lesson, after having some practices, Ss will learn to distinguish between them. If time allows , the SS will have a chance to correct their own mistakes.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of confusing words ( job/work, listen/hear, remember/reminder, fun/funny, forget/leave) in the context of "millionaires".

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice through conversations and discussions in the context of "millionaires".

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students in the topic "Millionaire"

1-A quick grouping activity. 2-Play the video (Slumdug Millionaire). Tell SS "the guy in the movie became a millionaire through a contest. Maybe a future millionaire is one of you." 3- Write the question on the White Board. "Have you got what it takes to be a millionaire?" 4-SS discuss in pairs. 5-Monitor whether they understand the meaning of the question or not. If they are not clear, clarify the meaning. 6-Get feedback.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a survey

1-Distribute "Have you got what it takes to be a millionaire?" Survey HO. 2- SS do the survey in pairs. Ex.7A( One S asks the questions first and the other answers. Then, they swap roles) 3-The answer key will be projected on the board and SS will check their scores and the explanations. 4-After that, SS will discuss the questions in pairs (Do you agree with what the survey says about your score? Why? Why not ? , Do you know anyone who would make a good entrepreneur ?Why? ) 5-Monitor and note down the mistakes for delayed correction. 6- SS stand up and share each others's answers.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language (confusing words)

1-Write on the board "I went to the job yesterday " and ask Ss "Is that a correct sentence?Why?, Why not?" 2- The SS do the Ex.8 alone. 3-Nominate SS to share their answers.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

1-Elicit from SS the meaning of following words. (Work is what you do to earn money. A job is the particular type of work that you do. (The others are: remember /remind, forget/leave, hear/listen , fun/ funny) 2-After that, clarify the parts of speech of the confusing words. a-Work can be used as a verb and a noun, job is a noun. b-Remind and remember are both verbs c-Forget and leave are both verbs d-Listen and hear are also both verbs. e-Fun is a noun, funny is an adjective. f)-Earn and win are both verbs. 3- Drill chorally , and show the stress on the board.

Controlled Practice-1 (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

1-Regroup or repair activity (According to the number of SS) 2-SS will underline correct words in the sentences given.(Ex.9A) 3-SS will discuss the answers and the differences between the words in each sentence in pairs. 4-Monitor and help SS if they need.

Controlled Practice-2 (5-7 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

1-Distribute the Ex.10A HO. 2-Give instructions and demo the 1st question. SS will complete the questions in pairs. 3-The questions will be projected on the board. 3-Monitor and support if they need. 4-Get some feedback 5-Nominate SS to write the correct answers on the board.

Freer Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with freer practice of the target language

1-In this part of the lesson, SS will have a conversation in pairs (Ex.10B) 2-Give instructions as " In this example, your pair ask you the questions from Ex.10A and you answer the questions and after you finished, you will take your turn to ask questions." Ask ICQ : Will you answer these questions alone?Will you use the Ex.9 ? 3-Monitor and note down common errors for later feedback.

Error correction and feedback (2-3 minutes) • To encourage SS to correct their own errors

-If time allows , while concluding the lesson I will write down the mistakes on the board and SS will try to correct them
