In this lesson, students will look at some samples of profiles on social networking sites.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To enable students to read for specific information given in a profile / T allow students an opportunity to use the language in their own profiles

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of word order in simple present sentences in the context of writing a profile

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To get Ss interested in the topic To introduce the topic via a quick speaking task

Show the symbol of facebook on the projector. Ss tell what the symbol stands for. Ss will be given a handout on which they will find some categories like salary, health problems, nationality, home, work, education, etc. Ss will choose the categories which they can find about a person on Facebook in pairs. Get feedback.

Reading for specific information (5-7 minutes) • To read the text for details

Ss read the text to find if the sentences are true or false. Ss check their answers in pairs. Get feedback.

Language Focus 1 (4-5 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the functional language

Show the sentences on the board. Ss complete the chart with the words from the sentences in pairs. Ss come to the board and write the answers. Do choral and individual drilling.

Language Focus 2 (4-5 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the functional language

Show sentences on the board. Ss complete the sentences with the correct preposition looking back at the text they've read at the beginning of the lesson. They work in pairs. Ss come to the board and complete the sentences. Do choral and individual drilling.

Practice (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with practice of the language focus

Ss put the words in the correct order. They work individually. Ss check their answers in pairs. Ss come to the board and write their answers. Correct errors and give feedback where necessary.

Language Focus 3 (4-5 minutes) • To clarify useful language for coming productive task

Show the sentences on the board. Take out the extra information from the sentences. Ss look back at the text and complete the sentences in pairs. Ss write their answers on the board. Give feedback. Ask Ss to find and circle the prepositions in the extra information in pairs. Do choral drilling.

Semi-controlled Practice (4-5 minutes) • To provide Ss with an opportunity to use the language in a meaningful context

Ss read the Internet profile and complete it with the words and phrases in the box in pairs. Ss come to the board and write their answers. Correct errors and give feedback where necessary.

Writing Practice (5-7 minutes) • To provide Ss with an opportunity to create their own Internet profile using the useful language they have learned

Ss complete the chart with the necessary information for their Internet profile individually. Monitor effectively. Do delayed error correction on the board.
