Description

In this lesson, the beginner students will learn the simple present tense focusing on the "have, like, study, live and work" verbs. They will learn how to make a sentence in simple present form by using the "I, You, They" subject pronouns. Both negative and positive sentences in simple present will be the main focus of the lesson. I will use images to clarify the new words. The ss will enhance their vocabulary treasure besides grammar.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of Simple Present Tense in the context of daily life by using "I, You, They" subject pronouns in positive and negative forms.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of basic verbs in English "have, study, work, live and like" in the context of daily life

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will show some images depicting the verbs "like, live, have, study and work". And I will stick those images on the board and write the verbs to clarify the images.

Exposure (11-12 minutes) • To provide a model of the task and highlight useful words and phrases

I will show the grammatical structure of simple present with the help of power points. And I will use images showing the positive and negative forms of simple present. For example; I will stick an image on the board and say "I am a teacher and I work at a university." and I will show another image and say "You're students and you study English". They will make sentences in negative form as well. The next step will be pair work and each student will tell their partner.

Task (8-9 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

They will listen to a passage and try to fill in the gaps individually. And after finishing the listening, they will check their answers with their partners. I will reflect a slideshow on the board, they will write their answers in the gaps, and the students will discuss whether the given answers are true or not.

Planning (7-8 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to plan students' reports

I will split up simple present sentences word by word like "work", "I", "in the office", "don't" and they will come to board and get the papers that I stick on the board and try to make a meaningful sentences with their group friends. And after making logical sentences in the right order, they will come to the board and stick their papers according to the grammatical structure of simple present. So the whole class will be able to see the answers.

Language Practice (7-8 minutes) • To allow students to use the target language that they learnt

In this stage, the students will write 3 true and 3 false sentences about themselves. They will use both negative and positive forms of simple present. Before the students starting this exercise, I will make a sample exercise for them on the board. After writing 6 sentences, they will make a simple dialogue like : Student A :"I like Chinese food." Student B : "I think that's true/false"

Language Analysis (4-5 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the task language

I will write the new verbs on the board and use the group and individual drilling technique for proper pronunciation.
