Description

In the lesson the students will learn vocabulary about dealing with misunderstandings and have opportunities for both speaking practice and listening.

Materials

Abc whiteboard, paper and pen

Main Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice through conversations and discussions in the context of "misunderstandings".

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide specific information listening practice using a text about telephone converstations in the context of "misunderstandings"

Procedure

Warm Up (5-6 minutes) • To introduce Ss to the idea of "Misunderstandings"

1. - Quick synonym game to pair Ss. 2. - Seat according to pairs. 3. - Share a brief story of a personal misunderstanding. 4. - Have Ss share their own experiences in P/W. 5. - Nominate 1 S to share their own experience W/C.

Picture and Story (14-15 minutes) • Speaking

1. Project an image on the board and ask Ss what they think it's about F/B. 2. Distribute first part of story and give 2 minutes to read alone. 3. Check comprehension with Teacher Book questions. W/C 4. Distribute final part of story and give 1 minute to read alone. 5. Check comprehension with Teacher Book questions. W/C 6. Collect the story papers and have Ss retell the story in their pair the using word bank. 7. Nominate stronger Ss to share W/C.

Re-Pair or Re-Group (1-2 minutes) • To make fresh groups for the next activites

1. Divide the class into pairs or groups (depending on class size) according to expressions a. You've lost me. b. What exactly do you mean? c. I didn't catch any of that. d. I don't get what you're saying. e. Can you say that again? f. Do you mean to tell me?

Teaching Vocab (6-8 minutes) • To briefly introduce Ss to expressions related to "Misunderstandings"

1. Give quick/easy instructions concerning Vocabulary exercise. 2. Distribute handout and give 2 minutes to complete alone. 3. Get Ss to check their work in pairs. 4. Get Ss to discuss the meaning of the words in bold 5. Elicit F/B to check accuracy.

Listening Exercise - 1st Time (4 minutes) • To get Ss to identify what kind of problem each conversation has

1. Give quick/easy instructions so Ss know what to listen for. 2. Play clip and elicit feedback for answer.

Listening Exercise - 2nd Time (4-5 minutes) • To get Ss to listen to story and answer specifc questions

1. Give quick/easy instructions so Ss know what to listen for. 2. Distribute questions that Ss will answer during listening activity. 3. Play clip. 4. Have Ss check their answers in their pairs. 5. Elicit F/B

Listening Exercise - 3rd Time (5-6 minutes) • To get students to check their work by listening to the exercise.

1. Give quick/easy instructions so Ss know how to complete the exercise. 2. Have Ss check their answers in their pairs. 3. Have Ss listen a 3rd time to the exercise and check their answers accordingly. 4. Elicit feedback.
