Futurological Coference Reading
Pre Intermediate level

Description

In this lesson students will first discover the word "science-fiction" by seeing some movie posters and then practise their reading skills to find the gist and specific information in the context of a reading text about a Futurological Conference. The students will also discover the meaning of some lexis from the text and do some controlled practise about it. They will then do a freer practise of the language they learn orally in pairs/groups.

  • to provide the MFP of some of the lexis from the reading text (cure, energy, source, technology, satellite, theory)

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-6 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Science fiction movie posters will be posted on the board and studenst will be asked if they know the movies. The types of the movies will be asked to elicit the word science-fiction (sci-fi) and the pronunciation will be practiced. They will be introduced some useful lexis (E.T.,UFO, Artificial Intelligence, a mutant, a robot, a space station) for the discussion Students will be asked which ones they have seen. and then they will be put in pairs to discuss what happens in the movie. Then pairs will be asked for some feedback

Students will be asked the meaning of the word futurology. The suffix will be separated on the board for them to make it easier to understand. The pronunciation will be practised Then they will be given the invitation prepared for them and asked what it is to elicit the phrase futurological conference. Students will be asked who can talk and what can be mentioned in a futurological conference to get some ideas and make them engaged in the reading.

While-Reading #1 (5-6 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Students will have a look at the reading text and teacher will highlight the gaps, telling that the titles of the speeches are missing. Then teacher will introduce the titles and give the insturctions to decide the three irrelevant ones to read the text not in detail but to have general understanding of it. Set a time limit (1 minute) When they have finished let them do peer check and post the answers on the board.

While-Reading #2 (9-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

After getting familiar with the text, students will be asked to read the text again this time in detail to fill the gaps with the correct title from the previous example. When they have finished, let them do peer check. Then post the answers on the board and discuss any incorrect answer.

While-Reading #3 (4-5 minutes) • To clarify the MFP of some lexis from the reading text

Students will be shown the HO with the definitions of the lexis from the reading text and be given the instructions to find them in the related talks. They will work in pairs to find the answers and then give feedback. (Wrong answers will be discussed)

Controlled Practice (3-4 minutes) • To provide students with controlled practice of the target language

Students will be given the HO in which they will complete the gaps with the words from the previous HO. Then they do peer check and answer key will be posted.

Post-Reading/Listening (5-6 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Three questions will be posted on the board. A-Which of the talks at the conference would you like to go? Why? B- Answers. Then B asks and A answers. If the students cannot produce enough language, the activity is repeated with different pairs, this time giving information about the previous partner.

Delayed Error Correction (3-4 minutes) • To reformulate and correct the errors students students make in post reading task

Some examples from the good language and some common errors that students make while practising the language are written on the board. The good language is praised and students are asked what is wrong in the incorrect language. The sentences are reformulated with their answers.
