TP5 Magical Places Reading lesson

Description

In this lesson, the ss will focus on receptive skills-jigsaw reading for gist and detailed information as a main-skill and on productive skills- speaking for fluency as a sub-skill. The ss will have the opportunity to convey their knowledge about their reading text verbally to their peers. There'll be a vocab exercise to support the ss with pronunciation and meaning.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about Magical Places in the context of Travelling

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of travel

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The ss try to guess the name to the places in the photographs. The ss try to guess what the people are doing in the photograph. "Look at these two photographs. do you recognize these magical places?" "Where are they located, what are the names of these places?" "What are people doing around the mausoleum?" "Do you have superstituous beliefs? what other magical places do you know?

Pre-Reading (5-6 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

The ss try to guess the answers to the questions by discussing in pairs: (2 min) "Where do you think these places are located?" "In what way do you think these places are important to people?" "For what purpose do you think these people go to these places?" The ss give WC FB and the T writes the answers shortly on board later to be compared with the text.

While-Reading #1 (10-11 minutes) • To provide students with gist and detailed information reading tasks

The ss are divided into 3 groups "You're going to work in groups" "each group reads only one part." "Read individually." ( 2 min for gist) The ss give feedback whether their guesses were correct or not. "Now read again and answer the questions." "Check your answers with your peers." Group A Tasik Dayang Bunting, Malasia Group B The fountain of Trevi, Italy Group C The Blarney Stone, Ireland

While-Reading #2 (10-11 minutes) • To provide students with detailed information reading tasks about the other parts

The ss are regrouped and mingled so that A,B and C can work together. (6 min) "Now you're going to mingle into groups." "Each member of a different group will talk about their reading text." "You can utilize from the reading questions you answered." The ss in each different groups give WC FB

Controlled Practise (7-8 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation and spelling of the target language used in the reading text

The ss will work in the same groups and do the vocabulary activity.(3 min) The ss will give WC FB and the T elicits the word stresses from the ss. The ss drill some of the problematic vocabulary chorally and individually.

Post-Reading (5-6 minutes) • To provide the ss with a semi-controlled speaking practice to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

The ss have a conversation in pairs: (3 min) "Which place would you want to go and why?" The ss give WC FB
