Description

In this lesson, the students develop their speaking fluency skills by first brainstorming what the stories are about, looking at the three newspaper headlines, then reading the newspaper reports about the same topic of ‘The News-Protests’ caused by plans to build a road, which is followed by sharing the information between the groups of the students. The last stage of the lesson will be a semi-controlled discussion of the given questions which is followed by freer speaking based on the comparison of their ideas and their choice of the best one.

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To generate Ss’ interest in the topic

Ss look at the three newspaper headlines and say what they think the reports are about.

Reading for Gist (5-7 minutes) • To get general overview of the text

T puts Ss into groups of three Each group has a different newspaper report A, B or C containing information about the same story Ss read the information and share what they have understood from the text with their peers

Semi-controlled speaking (12-15 minutes) • To exchange information about the reports

Ss form different groups of three Ss share their information A, B and C with the others in the group T asks CCQs to check their understanding of the texts

Freer Speaking (12-15 minutes) • To be better able to use unreal conditional sentences in speech

Ss form different groups of three Ss discuss ‘What would you do if… ?‘ questions based on the topic Ss compare their ideas with the ideas of other groups T monitors and collects errors for the delayed feedback Ss decide whose ideas are best

Delayed FB on mistakes (2-3 minutes) • To make Ss aware of their mistakes

T puts Ss’ mistakes on the w/b and elicits corrections from them
