Description

In this lesson students will learn some useful functional language to express doubt in the context of places with magical properties. They will practice listening for gist and listening for specific information and at the productive stage students will have a free speaking activity about such magical places they know.

Materials

  • To provide clarification and practice of language used for expressing doubt in the context of places which are supposed to have magical properties

  • To provide semi-controlled speaking practice in a meaningful, real-life context

Procedure

Lead-In (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson contex and engage students

- Put a picture of Stonehenge on the board and elicit the name of the place. - Ask Ss what they know about Stonehenge and try to get Ss to talk about its magical properties.

Pre-Listening (5-7 minutes) • To prepare students for the listening and make it accessible

- Put the the pictures of The Fountain of Youth and The Statue of Daikokuten on board with their names and ask Ss whether they know these magical places or not. - Give Ss the two extracts from two guidebooks about these places. - Ss read the extracts first and answer these questions in pairs: 1. What positive effects can these places have on visitors? 2. What do you think of these claims? - T gets WCFB asking a few Ss about their ideas.

While-Listening #1 (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with listening for gist task

- Ss listen to two conversations about The Fountain of Youth and Statue of Daikokuten and answer this question: What are the attitudes of the speakers towards the two places? - Ss check their answers in pairs. - T gest WCFB.

While-Listening #2 (4-5 minutes) • To provide students with listening for detail practice

- Ss listen to the recording again and they tick the arguments that the speakers express. - Ss check their answers in pairs. - T presents the answer key on the board and Ss check their answers.

Language Focus (7-9 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the items of functional langauge.

- Ss are given handouts and they put the words in the box in the right sentences from the listening to make phrases that express doubt. - Ss compare their answers in pairs. - Ss listen and check their answers. - Ss listen to the recording again paying attention to the intonation of the phrases. - Ss work in pairs and practice repeating the sentences with the correct intonation.

While-Listening #3 (4-6 minutes) • To provide students with listening for detail practice

- Ss listen to the word 'Really' spoken with three different kinds of intonation and decide which speaker expresses interest, surprise or doubt. - Ss compare their answers in pairs. - T gets WCFB. - Ss listen to the recording again and repeat.

Speaking (7-9 minutes) • To provide students with the opportunity to use target functional language in a meaningful, real-life context

- Ss think of a place they know which is supposed to have magical properties and tell their partners about it. Their partners express doubt. - Ss swap roles and roleplay again. - T gives delayed correction if necessary.
