The Family

Description

In this lesson,the students are going to practice the vocabulary on the concept of Family.It is a listening lesson and the students are expected to match the illustrations with the descriptions and to identify key information while listening.

Main Aims

  • To provide listening for gist and detailed information in the context of Family.

Subsidiary Aims

  • Speaking:to provide accuracy speaking practice in a pair work and a group work in the context of family

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-7 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

-Bring a photo of a famous family in Turkey and ask students what they know about this family.Ask how many people they are,their ages ,names and their relationships with each other and elicit one or two additional facts. -While giving information elicit the key language as:parents,daughter,son,in the middle,next to,in the end,on the left/right,pretty. -Tell the students you are going to make some true and some false statements about this family.. -Explain that they must recall the information you gave them and call out True or False.

Pre-Listening (3-6 minutes) • To prepare students for thelistening and make it accessible

-Write the board ''Family'' and elicit the words about family. words: Bigbrother,dad,family,father,grandma,grandmother,little sister,mother,parents etc. -Review pronounciation,then check the key language for any additional words that you think your student may not know and write them on the board.

While-Listening #1 (6-9 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information listening tasks

-Put students into pairs.Give one student a copy of the Vishna Family,and give their partner a copy of the Blake family.Give students time to study their pictures and try to understand the members of the family (dad,mother,children etc.) -Explain that they are going to listen to two people talk about their family.They must listen and decide which dialogue describes the family in the picture. -Play the recording.Then,check students' answers.

While-Listening #2 (8-12 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference listening tasks

-Give each student a set of name cards that corresponds to their picture. -Explain that they are going to listen again,and this time they must put each name card next to the correct person in the picture. -They must also write the age of each person in the space provided on their name card. -Play the recording. -Tell students to look at their partner's picture.(Swaping the pictures with their partners).Explain that they must listen and check their partners' anwers. -Play the recording.Then tell the students take their own pictures and check the answers.

Post-Listening (8-12 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

-Tell students it will be a group work and tell them to look at the both pictures together. -Give them 2 minutes to study the information.Then tell them cover the pictures and remember as many facts as they can about the two families,such as Jenny Blake is 16 years old. -Tell students to make notes about their own family.They should note how many people there are,ages, names and give one or two additional facts.Then put students into pairs to tell each other about the people in their family. -When students finish tell them to stand up and find a new partner and tell them about their families.
