Main Aims

  • Listening in the context of holiday locations, specifically for informal lexis

Subsidiary Aims

  • Informal lexis related to daily life / Free speaking for fluency

Procedure

Lead in (3-8 minutes) • To set the context for the students

Ask the students where they went for their last holiday, did they have a good time, would they want to live there?

My Ibiza Exercise 1- Pre-Listening (8-15 minutes) • To prepare the students for the audio they are about to hear

Give HO - Ibiza People. Go through their names, ages and jobs as a whole group. Give the students HO - Ibiza Listening and give them all 1 minute to read through the statements in Ex. 1. Put the students into pairs and ask them to guess who is most likely to say to say each of these things. (~6 minutes). Once they have all finished this in their pairs, put the pairs into groups of 4 (a pair of pairs) and ask them to discuss what they have decided and see if they all agree. ***Optional*** if this is managed in a short amount of time, ask the students to all come together as a class and write on the board a-f and get the students to vote on who is most likely to say each one, by voting/short discussion.

My Ibiza Exercise 2- While-Listening (8-12 minutes) • Get the students to scan listen in order to check their answers

Explain to the students that they are now going to listen to 3 very short interviews with the people pictured on the board. They need to listen to see if they where correct in their guesses or not. Play the tape once all the way through and make check that they managed to get all the correct answers, if they need it, play the tape again. ***Optional*** if the optional pre-listening task was done, check the answers to that as well and see how well they did as a whole class

Extra Listening Exercise (6-10 minutes) • Give the students more scan listening practise

Give the students the true/false HO and explain to them that they are going to listen to the same recording and they have to ascertain if the given statements are true or false. Play the recording through once, check if they managed all of them, play again if needed. Get them to check their answers with the person sitting next to them. Check the answers as a whole class, if the answer is false get them to give the true version. Answers: 1. F (9 days) | 2. T | 3. T | 4. T | 5. F (North Ibiza) | 6. F (he doesn't)

Introduction to Informal lexis (8-12 minutes) • To give the students an introduction to some informal words used in English

Make the students clear on the fact that (most likely akin to their native language) English has informal words that are used on a daily basis between friends. <-- Very brief! Give the HO with the correct sentences and the informal words. Put them into pairs (the same ones are fine!) and ask them to, infer the meaning from the context. Give them around 5 minutes to complete this. Get them into groups of 4 to compare their answers. Finally complete this section by checking the answers as a whole group.

Concept Checking the Informal Lexis (4-6 minutes) • To ensure the class understands the informal lexis.

Ask the students to come up with another correct sentence using the informal lexis they just encountered. Give them around 2 minutes to do this in pairs and then, as a whole class get at least one sentence for each informal lexis (more if time permits). Ensure a varied source for the new sentences.

Free speaking practice (8-10 minutes) • Give the students chance to structure a conversation in a semi structured environment

Give the students the HO - Anecdote. Explain to them that they must remember the last time they went to a place where people where dancing, they must choose 3 questions from the list and ask those questions to their partner and get the answers. To conclude this exercise (and this section of the lesson) ask the students the following questions about their partner (answer by way of hand raising) 1. Whose partner went clubbing in the last month? 2. Who reckons their partner enjoyed it? Select 1+ (time dependent) student and ask this follow up question How Come?
